Volleyball earns two wins in crossover play

CHEYNEY, Pa. (Sept. 21) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play on Friday with a pair of league crossover victories, sweeping the host Wolves before defeating Kutztown in four sets.

With the wins, the Vulcans improve to 12-2 this year with a 2-0 mark in conference play.

In their opening match on Friday, the Vulcans cruised to a 3-0 sweep (25-9, 25-3, 25-12) over the host Wolves. Redshirt freshman Renee Helmer (Oakville, Ontario/Abbey Park) led the team with nine kills on 12 attempts to finish with a .667 hitting percentage, while freshman Jeannie Catterton (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam) collected five kills on a .556 hitting percentage.

Sophomores Laurel Miller (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and Julia Muzy (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Liceu Franco Brasileiro) each paced the defense with seven digs, while Muzy also registered four service aces against Cheyney. Senior Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) finished with five digs and tied junior Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) for the team lead with eight assists.

Cal U closed play on Friday evening with a 3-1 win (25-21, 25-17, 23-25, 25-9) against the Golden Bears. Senior Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) was one of three players in double-digit kills, tallying 12 kills on 18 attempts for a .556 hitting percentage. Fellow seniors Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) both recorded 10 kills in the victory, while classmate Ana Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Promove) added eight kills and four service aces in the win.

Freund and Fromknecht both recorded double-doubles against Kutztown with Freund posting 23 assists and 14 digs and Fromknecht finishing with 22 assists and 10 digs. Fromknecht also tallied seven kills and three blocks on Friday night. Harris tied for the team lead with 14 digs for her second double-double of the year, while junior Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) added 12 digs and a season-high six service aces.

The Vulcans continue league crossover play tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 22, with a match at West Chester, starting at 12 p.m.
