Vulcans earn two wins at Bentley Invite

WALTHAM, Mass. (Sept. 15) – The Vulcans closed play at the Bentley Invitational with a pair of wins on Saturday, defeating both the host Falcons and Georgian Court (N.J.) in three sets.

With the victories, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 10-2 this season.

Against Bentley, the Vulcans recorded a 3-0 sweep (25-7, 25-19, 25-16) in the first match of the day. Senior Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) led the team with 10 kills and classmate Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) added nine kills in the victory. Fellow senior Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) collected eight kills on a .462 hitting percentage, while tallying 16 assists, two service aces and two blocks.

Senior Ana Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Promove) paced the defense with 15 digs, while juniors Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) and Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) each finished with seven digs. Freund also posted 15 assists against the Falcons.

Cal U finished play at the invitational with a 3-0 win (25-17, 25-21, 28-26) over Georgian Court. Harris finished with a team-high 12 kills and Delaney added eight kills on 14 attempts. Freund directed the offense with 29 assists, while four players totaled at least five digs in the sweep.

The Vulcans return to action next weekend for a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover, starting with two matches at Cheyney on Friday, Sept. 21.
