Cal U sweeps in debut of new facility, 3-0

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 11) – In the first match in the history of the Convocation Center, the Vulcans collected a 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-17, 25-17) in their home-opener versus West Virginia Wesleyan on Thursday night.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 7-2 this season. Meanwhile, West Virginia Wesleyan suffered its fourth-straight loss to fall to 4-5 overall.

Senior Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) led the team with 10 kills on Thursday, while freshman Mary Lavery (La Plata, Md./La Plata) posted six kills. Senior Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) added five kills on nine attempts for a team-leading .556 attack percentage against the Bobcats.

Sophomore Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) and senior Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) each directed the offense with 14 assists and Fromknecht tied classmate Ana Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Promove) for the team lead with nine digs.

Senior middle hitter Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and Fromknecht recorded six and five blocks, respectively, at the Convocation Center.

The Vulcans return to action this weekend with three matches at the Bentley Invitational in Waltham, Mass., on Sept. 14-15.
