CAL U NOTES
• Cal U opens PSAC West play with a night game this weekend after earning a thrilling 48-45 comeback victory last weekend at then-No. 11 Kutztown, the defending-PSAC Champions. Meanwhile, Edinboro suffered a 30-14 season-opening loss at then-No. 19 Bloomsburg last week.
• The Vulcans scored the first 27 points of the game last week and twice scored the go-ahead touchdown in the final five minutes of the game to secure a 48-45 victory over then-No. 11 Kutztown. Senior
Peter Lalich established a career high with 398 passing yards on 30-of-59 attempts, which broke the single-game school record. Lalich threw for a pair of touchdowns and also was one of four players to score a rushing touchdown in the win. Junior
Darnell Harding anchored the defense by setting a career high with 2.5 sacks and tying a career best with 3.5 TFL. Freshman
Rodney Gillin led the team with seven tackles (five solo).
• The Vulcans and Fighting Scots are meeting for the 79th time with Cal U owning a 41-35-2 lead after winning the last seven games. Last year, Cal U posted a 34-28 win over Edinboro in the final week of divisional play.
• After a 20-year career as an assistant coach at Edinboro,
Scott Browning is in his seventh season as head coach of the Fighting Scots. He holds a 45-24 overall record and in his first six years he won more games than any previous Edinboro head coach during that period. Browning has coached the offensive line, defensive backs and running backs, along with serving as the offensive coordinator while at Edinboro.
• Edinboro returns 12 starters (six offense, six defense) from a team that finished 7-4 overall and fourth in the divisional standings with a 4-3 mark last year. The Fighting Scots feature their third different offensive coordinator in as many years in
Bryan Volk, who held the position at Fordham since 2009. Junior quarterback
Cody Harris returns for his third season as the starter after earning All-PSAC West Second-Team laurels in 2011. Last season, he ranked eighth in NCAA Division II with a 158.03 passing efficiency and set a school record with a 72.2 completion percentage. Junior
Marcus Johnson is the Fighting Scots' top returning wide receiver, as he ranked second on the team with 417 yards and five touchdowns on 20 catches last year. Edinboro returns two of its top three rushers from last year in senior
Brian Davis and junior
D'Andrea Vaughn. Davis led the team last year with 552 rushing yards and five scores, while Vaughn posted 390 yards and averaged 5.7 yards per attempt. Defensively, Edinboro returns just one of its top four tacklers from last year - senior defensive back
Kenny Pettis, who posted 61 stops and three interceptions last year. The Fighting Scots feature a pair of talented cornerbacks in junior
James Jackson and
Branden Williams, both of who recorded four interceptions in 2011. Edinboro features a pair of new specialists this season in senior punter
J.D. Rodgers and freshman kicker
Sean Seefeldt. Rodgers averaged nearly 40 yards on seven punts last week, while Seefeldt has yet to attempt a collegiate field goal.
• With its second-straight win over a nationally-ranked opponent, Cal U moved up four spots in both the AFCA and D2Football.com Top 25 polls to No. 6. The Vulcans are ranked in the top 10 of the AFCA poll in back-to-back weeks for the time since 2010. Cal U enters the weekend with its highest ranking in the polls since October 2010 (No. 3).
• Cal U has won its last seven and nine of its last 12 PSAC West-opening games. Over the last seven years, the Vulcans have won in dominating fashion in their PSAC West-openers, beating divisional opponents by an average of 43-11. Cal U has scored over 30 points in six of the last seven PSAC West-openers.
• For the first time since 2008, Cal U opens PSAC West divisional play against Edinboro with a night game at Sox Harrison Stadium. In that meeting, the Vulcans claimed a 35-31 victory over the Fighting Scots in the first night game at Edinboro. That year also marked the last time Cal U started a year with two-straight games against nationally-ranked teams.
• Former All-American defensive back
Terrence Johnson signed a free-agent contract with the Atlanta Falcons this week. Last season, he appeared in 10 games and made two starts with the Indianapolis Colts, who cut him late last month. Johnson replaces Pro Bowl cornerback
Brent Grimes, who played at Shippensburg (2002-05), on the Falcons active roster.
• Last season, the Vulcans became the fourth school in PSAC history, and the first since West Chester (2004-08), to reach the NCAA Playoffs in five-straight years. No program in the league has made six-consecutive berths in the NCAA Playoffs and IUP is the only school to have reached the postseason five-straight years on multiple separate occasions.
• For their efforts in last week's win at nationally-ranked Kutztown, junior defensive lineman
Darnell Harding and senior quarterback
Peter Lalich were selected the PSAC West Defensive and Offensive Player of the Week, respectively. It marked the first time the Vulcans swept the weekly awards since the 2007 season. Lalich received the honor for the third time in his career, while Harding became the third different defensive player in the last two years to earn the laurel.
• Junior wide receiver
Mike Williams established career highs in receptions and yards last weekend, posting his first career 100-yard game at Kutztown. Through the first two weeks, he is tied for second in the PSAC with 15 receptions and ranks fourth with 218 receiving yards. Williams, who made five starts last season, entered the year with only 28 career receptions.
• Senior defensive back
Rontez Miles is one of just eight players from NCAA Division II programs featured on the Senior Bowl Watch List. A First-Team All-American in 2011, he leads the team with 15 tackles (eight solo) and has added two pass break-ups and one forced fumble this season. Miles has totaled 14 stops (10 solo), 2.5 TFL and 1.0 sack in his career against Edinboro. The 2013 Senior Bowl is scheduled for Jan. 26 in Mobile, Ala.
• This weekend's game features two of the three returning football Capital One Academic All-Americans from the PSAC last season. Cal U senior offensive lineman
Chet Welc and Edinboro senior defensive back
Branden Williams were among nine players from the league to earn the academic honor in 2011 with both garnering Second-Team Academic All-America status. Welc, a former tight end, has started 15 consecutive games at right tackle over the last two seasons and Williams is a three-year starter at cornerback with 14 career interceptions.
• In only two seasons, senior
Peter Lalich has established himself as one of the most prolific quarterbacks in school history. He registered his fifth career 300-yard game last week and established a career high with 398 passing yards, which ranks as the fifth-highest single-game total in school history. His total ranks as the most passing yards since 2008 when
Kevin McCabe, another former Virginia quarterback, set the record with 443 yards in the PSAC Championship Game. Lalich also tied his career high with 30 completions against the Golden Bears and eclipsed the single-game school record with 59 pass attempts, breaking the previous record of 57 attempts set by
Sam Mannery in 1990.
• Senior
Lamont Smith rushed for 109 yards and one touchdown in last week's victory at nationally-ranked Kutztown. The Vulcans have posted a perfect 13-0 record over the last three seasons when Smith has surpassed the 100-yard mark, including a 129-yard performance last year against Edinboro. In three years with the program, he has rushed for 2,440 yards and 18 touchdowns on over 470 carries.
• After facing one of the elite running backs in NCAA Division II during the season-opener, Cal U limited Kutztown to just 17 rushing yards on 21 attempts last week. In comparison, the Golden Bears totaled nearly 300 rushing yards on 44 carries during their season-opener. Cal U enters the weekend ranked fourth in the PSAC in rushing defense, allowing 91.0 yards per game.
• In only his second career start, junior defensive lineman
Darnell Harding set a career high with 2.5 sacks and tied his career high with 3.5 TFL in last week's victory at Kutztown.
