Cal U splits on second day at Rollins

WINTER PARK, Fla. (Sept. 1) – The Vulcans took a split on Saturday while competing at the Rollins (Fla.) Invitational, dropping a 3-1 match to No. 19 Eckerd (Fla.) before earning a 3-0 win against Minnesota State-Moorhead.

With the split, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team finished the season-opening weekend with a 3-1 record.

Against Eckerd, the Vulcans suffered a 3-1 loss (25-13, 25-27, 19-25, 28-30) on Saturday morning. Senior Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) led four players in double-digit kills with a career-high 24 on 61 attempts versus the Tritons. Sophomore Julia Muzy (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Liceu Franco Brasileiro) finished with 13 kills and senior Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) added 12 kills on a team-best .364 hitting percentage.

Senior Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) collected a triple-double in the loss, registering 11 kills, 28 assists and 11 digs, while also posting five blocks. Junior Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) added 33 assists, while classmate Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) paced the defense with 18 digs.

Cal U responded with a 3-0 sweep (25-23, 27-25, 25-20) against Minnesota State-Moorhead in the afternoon on Saturday. Harris and Muzy led the offense with 12 and 11 kills, respectively, while senior Bridget Bielich added eight kills on 11 attempts for a team-best .636 hitting percentage.

Fromknecht posted 25 assists, six kills and six digs in the win and Freund tallied a double-double with 19 assists and 13 digs. Delaney collected a team-high 14 digs in the victory.

The Vulcans return to action next weekend in Ohio at the Findlay Invitational on Sept. 7-8.
