Vulcans roll past Mansfield, 96-49

CALIFORNIA (Dec. 18) – Junior forward Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) led four players scoring in double-figures on Tuesday evening, as the Vulcans posted a 96-49 win over Mansfield at Hamer Hall in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team improves to 6-1 this season with a 3-1 mark in league action. The Vulcans have won each of the 16 all-time meetings against the Mountaineers dating back to the 1988-89 season. Meanwhile, Mansfield falls to 3-4 overall behind a 1-3 record in conference play.

Antonenko led the team with 16 points in her first action over a month after making seven-of-eight attempts from the floor, including two-of-three from beyond the arc. She also recorded two blocks in 12 minutes off the bench on Tuesday. Antonenko has averaged 14.3 points in three games this season after entering the year with a career average of 3.8 points per game.

Freshman Jasmine Hill (Columbia, Md./Oakland Mills) finished with 14 points on six-of-nine shooting in her first career start and junior Ryah Gadson (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) added 12 points off the bench. Fellow junior Kate Seebohm (Millicent, Australia/Millicent) collected 12 points on five-of-seven attempts and totaled six assists and three steals in the victory.

After holding an early lead, the Vulcans scored nine-unanswered points to take a 15-2 lead on a three-pointer by sophomore Chelsea McKnight (Grove City, Ohio /Harvest Prep) with 14:24 left in the first half. Following a Mansfield basket, Cal U responded with another 15-2 run to take a 30-7 lead on three-straight three-pointers by Gadson with 10:23 left before the break. The Mountaineers trimmed the deficit to 41-24 before the Vulcans closed the first half with seven-straight points to take a 48-24 lead at halftime.

Cal U scored six-straight points to open the second half to take a 54-24 lead after Hill converted a three-point play. The Mountaineers cut the deficit 5o 56-33 before the Vulcans mounted a 13-1 rally to stretch the lead to 69-34 on a three-pointer from Antonenko with 10:44 remaining. Cal U later finished the game on a 16-0 run to earn a 96-49 victory.

For the game, the Vulcans shot 54.3 percent (38-of-70) from the field and 42.9 percent (12-of-28) from beyond the arc on a season-high 12 three-pointers. In comparison, the Mountaineers made 36.5 percent (19-of-52) from the floor and just 15.4 percent (2-of-13) from long range. Cal U forced Mansfield into 31 turnovers that led to 23 fastbreak points and 48 points off turnovers.

Freshman Katie Fiztpatrick led the Mountaineers with nine points, while junior Jena Matter added eight points and six rebounds in the loss.

Cal U returns to action tomorrow, Wednesday, Dec. 19, when it hosts preseason PSAC East-favorite and No. 22 Bloomsburg in Hamer Hall at 5:30 p.m.
