No. 15 Cal U blanks Bloomsburg, 4-0

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 9) – Sophomore Chelsea Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford) and junior Kelsey Russo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) each tallied a goal and an assist on Tuesday evening to lift the No. 15 Vulcans to a 4-0 victory against Bloomsburg in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at the Phillipsburg Soccer Facility.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team improves to 10-2-1 this year and remains tied for second in the league with 22 points behind a 7-1-1 record. The Vulcans also extended their home unbeaten streak to 24 games (23-0-1). Meanwhile, the Huskies fall to 4-7-1 overall with a 2-6-1 league mark.

The game was scoreless after the first half despite Bloomsburg fielding only 10 players for the last 11-plus minutes due to a red card. Following the break, the Vulcans took a 1-0 lead at the 46:36-mark with a goal by sophomore Jordan Gray (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair Secondary) off a pass from redshirt sophomore Bethany Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford). Cal U added to its lead in the 59th minute with a goal by Russo off assists from Crockett and Smyda before Crockett registered her fifth goal of the year off a pass from sophomore Erin Hogan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) less than three minutes later. At the 75:35-mark, freshman Kara Novotny (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) added to the lead with a goal following a feed from Russo.

Sophomore Ashley Magruda (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) tallied her sixth shutout of the year, making two saves on Tuesday. Bloomsburg sophomore Danielle Fiorelli finished with a career-high 12 saves in the losing effort.

The Vulcans continue league play on Saturday, Oct. 13, when they travel to face East Stroudsburg at 2:30 p.m.
