Vulcans down Ohio Valley, 5-1

VIENNA, W.Va. (Oct. 6) – Sophomore Brad Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) tallied a career-high four points and was one of five players to score a goal on Saturday afternoon, as the Vulcans posted a 5-1 victory at Ohio Valley (W.Va.) in non-conference play.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team improves to 6-5 overall behind a four-game winning streak. Meanwhile, Ohio Valley remains winless this season and falls to 0-10.

The Vulcans quickly took a 1-0 lead when freshman Anthony DiFrancesco (Bogart, Ga./North Oconee) scored off a feed from senior Billy Wilson (Glasgow, Scotland/St. Andrew's and St. Brides) just 32 seconds into the game. Sophomore Tyler Woolum (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) added to the lead in the 36th minute with assists from Colvin and sophomore Chris Hunkele (Hampton, Pa./Hampton).

Following halftime, freshman David Deamer (Manchester, Pa./Northeastern) scored the first goal of his career at the 62:43-mark off a pass from DiFrancesco, who made his first career start. Less than five minutes later, sophomore Kevin Helbig (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley) collected a goal following a throw-in by Colvin in the 68th minute. Colvin, who has two multi-assist games this year, scored his second goal of the season with an assist from fellow sophomore Jon Murphy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) at the 83:26-mark. The Fighting Scots avoided the shutout with a goal in the final minute of the game.

Sophomore Mitch Mack (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) earned the win while making his first start of the year, playing 73-plus scoreless minutes. Ohio Valley junior Darcy Turner finished with eight saves in the loss.

Cal U returns to action tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 7, when it hosts Chestnut Hills (Pa.) at 1 p.m.
