No. 21 Vulcans edge past Edinboro, 2-1

EDINBORO, Pa. (Oct. 3) – Redshirt sophomore Bethany Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) scored the game-winning goal in the 80th minute on Wednesday night, as the No. 21 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team collected a 2-1 win at Edinboro in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 8-2-1 overall with a 5-1-1 mark in league action. Cal U has won four-straight and seven of the last eight meetings against Edinboro, including a 5-1 victory in the semifinals of the 2011 PSAC Tournament. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 8-3 this season behind a 5-3 conference record.

Cal U took a 1-0 lead in the 13th minute on Wednesday when freshman Janelle McCann (Burlington, Vt./Tilton School) scored her fifth goal of the year off an assist from sophomore Erin Hogan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver). With the assist, Hogan became the first player in program history to record double-digit assists multiple times in a career and ranks sixth in school history with 22 career assists.

The Fighting Scots evened the score at the 65:41-mark when Jansen Hartmann scored on a breakaway. Cal U responded in the 80th minute when Smyda scored her third goal of the year following a feed from junior Kelsey Russo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel). Edinboro looked to force overtime in the closing minutes of regulation before sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Magruda (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) made a save on a penalty kick.

Magruda recorded eight saves on Wednesday and has now collected 16 saves over the last four games. Edinboro's Meghan Kelly finished with five saves in the losing effort.

The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Oct. 6, when they host Mansfield at 2 p.m.
