Women's Soccer edges No. 16 Kutztown, 2-1

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 24) – Junior Kelsey Russo (Pittsburgh, Pa./Fox Chapel) tallied three points on Wednesday afternoon and the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team moved into a tie for first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) standings with a  2-1 win against No. 16 Kutztown at the Phillipsburg Soccer Complex.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 13-3-1 overall with a 9-0 mark at home. Cal U is now tied with West Chester for first place entering the final weekend of the regular season with 31 points behind a 10-2-1 league record. Meanwhile, Kutztown, who entered the day with sole possession of first place, falls to 10-5-2 this season with a 9-3-2 mark (29 points) in conference play.

The Golden Bears took a 1-0 lead in the 10th minute on a header goal by Sarah Black following a corner kick. Cal U responded at the 29:36-mark when redshirt sophomore Bethany Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) scored her fifth goal of the season off a feed from Russo. The Vulcans broke the tie in the 65th minute when Russo recorded her fourth goal of the year with assists from sophomore Megan Politowski (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin) and senior Carley Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell).

Sophomore Ashley Magruda (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) earned her 12th victory of the season, posting five saves on Wednesday. Kutztown junior Alina Rakiewicz tallied six saves in the losing effort.

Cal U closes the regular season on Saturday, Oct. 27, when it travels to face Shippensburg at 5:30 p.m.

The Vulcans have already secured a berth in next week's PSAC Tournament; however, their seed and opponent is yet to be determined.
