Box Score

CALIFORNIA (Oct. 20) – Sophomore Erin Hogan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver) tied the single-season school record for assists on Saturday night, as the No. 13 Vulcans posted a 4-2 victory over Mercyhurst on Senior Night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team improves to 12-3-1 overall. The Vulcans remain tied for second place in the league standings with 28 points behind a 9-2-1 conference mark. Meanwhile, the Lakers fall to 6-9-1 this season with a 2-9-1 record in league play.

Hogan tied the single-season school record of 14 assists set by both Caroline Acome and Kim Kottmeier in 1994. Hogan, an All-PSAC Third-Team selection last year, now has sole possession of third place in school history with 26 career assists, breaking a tie with Lindsey Ferry (1994-97). Kottmeier holds the all-time school record with 35 assists.

The Vulcans took an early 1-0 lead when sophomore Stephanie Thompson (Queensville, Ontario/Huron Heights Secondary) scored off a header following a corner kick from Hogan in the fifth minute. Cal U extended its lead at the 24:53-mark when redshirt sophomore Bethany Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) scored her fourth goal of the year off an assist from sophomore Chelsea Crockett (Gilmanton, N.H./Gilford). Mercyhurst trimmed the deficit to 2-1 with just 27 seconds left in the first half on an unassisted goal by Kristina Roberti.

Cal U answered with a goal in the 51st minute, as Crockett tallied her sixth goal of the season off a feed from senior Carley Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell), who made her season debut on Saturday. The Lakers responded at the 68:55-mark with a goal by Sara Hawksworth off a corner kick that trimmed the deficit to 3-2. Hogan then added an insurance goal, her third of the year, in the 82nd minute with an assist from fellow sophomore Haley Henderson (Pickering, Ontario/Dunbarton).

Sophomore goalkeeper Ashley Magruda (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) posted four saves to earn the win. Lakers freshman Ellie McDougall finished with 12 saves in the losing effort.

Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Oct. 24, when it hosts league-leading Kutztown at 1 p.m.
