Vulcans upset No. 14 Wheeling Jesuit, 3-1

WHEELING, W.Va. (Oct. 2) – In a rematch of last year's NCAA Regional Championship game, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team defeated No. 14 Wheeling Jesuit 3-1 (25-22, 20-25, 25-21, 25-23) at the Alma Grace McDonough Center on Tuesday evening.

With the victory, Cal U improves to 16-2 overall. The Vulcans are now 7-1 in the last eight meetings against the Cardinals, with their only loss coming in last year's NCAA Atlantic Regional Championship. With the loss, Wheeling Jesuit falls to 17-2.

Seniors Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) each posted 14 kills, with Harris tying for the team lead with 15 digs. Classmate Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) tallied 10 kills on 19 attempts for a .368 hitting percentage and fellow senior Ana Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Promove) chipped in with nine kills in the victory.

Junior Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove)  registered her team-high seventh double-double of the year, tallying 21 assists and 10 digs. Senior Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) led the team with a season-high 28 assists while Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) tied Harris with 15 digs on Tuesday.

Cal U returns to action this weekend with four neutral matches at Clarion, Pa., in a Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover, starting with two matches on Friday, Oct. 5.
