Vulcans earn upset at No. 6 Gannon, 2-1

ERIE, Pa. (Oct. 16) – Behind a pair of first-half goals, the Vulcans earned a 2-1 upset victory at league-leading and No. 6 Gannon on Tuesday night in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team improves to 9-5-1 overall and 4-2-1 in league play. The Vulcans also extended their unbeaten streak to eight games (7-0-1). Meanwhile, the Golden Knights fall to 11-2 this season with a 5-1 mark in conference action.

Cal U took an early 1-0 lead when senior Chris Moehler (Centreville, Va./Paul VI Catholic) scored his team-leading eighth goal of the season in the ninth minute. The Vulcans added to their lead less than four minutes later when sophomore Tyler Woolum (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) recorded his third goal of the year off a pass from classmate Brad Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), who has totaled 13 points over the last eight games. Shortly after halftime, Gannon trimmed the deficit to 2-1 at the 50:40-mark with an unassisted goal by Tyler Hollingsworth.

Junior Alex Heston (Des Moines, Iowa/Roosevelt) earned the win in his first start of the year, posting three saves while facing 15 shots. Gannon junior Jason Barbarino collected six saves in the losing effort.

The Vulcans return to action on Friday, Oct. 19, when they host Mercyhurst at 7 p.m.
