Vulcans top Millersville in overtime, 86-69

CALIFORNIA (Jan. 6) – After tying the game in the final second of regulation, the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team scored 20 points in overtime to claim an 86-69 win over Millersville in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover play on Friday evening at the Convocation Center.

With their fifth-straight victory, the Vulcans improve to 8-3 overall and 5-2 in league action. Cal U snapped a three-game losing streak in overtime games by posting its first overtime win since February 2007. Meanwhile, the Marauders fall to 7-4 this season and are tied for first place in the PSAC East standings with a 4-3 record.

Senior guard Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake (Md.)) set a season high with 22 points after making 7-of-16 from the floor and eight-of-nine from the free-throw line. She also collected six rebounds and three assists while playing a career-high 41 minutes on Friday. In overtime, Luckett scored seven points and posted four rebounds against the Marauders.

Classmate Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) registered her second-straight double-double (third of the season), finishing with 19 points and 12 rebounds (four offensive). She was 6-of-15 from the field and 7-of-10 from the charity stripe, while also tallying three assists and two steals.

Sophomore guard Ryah Gadson (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) added nine points, four rebounds and a team-high five assists off the bench. Junior forward Nakia DeBlanc (Pittsburgh, Pa./Woodland Hills) finished with eight points and seven rebounds (four offensive) in her season debut, while sophomore Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) collected eight points and four rebounds off the bench.

Trailing by 10 points early in the second half, the Vulcans trimmed the deficit to 49-46 on a layup by Johns with 11:53 left in regulation. Millersville later expanded its lead to seven points, 57-50, before Cal U scored five-straight points to cut the deficit to 57-55 at the 5:12-mark. The Vulcans tied the contest at 61-61 before taking their first lead of the game, 64-63, on a pair of free-throws by Luckett with 1:49 remaining. Millersville responded by scoring three-straight points to take a 66-64 lead with 8.2 seconds left before DeBlanc scored the game-tying basket following an offensive rebound with 0.07 seconds remaining in regulation.

Cal U started overtime on a quick 7-0 run before Millersville countered with a three-pointer. The Vulcans then scored 13-unanswered points over the final two-plus minutes. In overtime, Cal U made five-of-eight attempts from the field and shot nine-of-nine from the free-throw line, while Millersville managed to shoot just 1-of-11 from the floor.

For the game, the Vulcans shot 40.8 percent (31-of-76) from the field and 76.9 percent from the free-throw line after tying their season high with 20 free-throws made. In comparison, the Marauders shot 34.2 percent (26-of-76) from the floor and made just 41.4 percent (12-of-29) from the charity stripe. Cal U finished with a 54-49 rebounding advantage and scored 14 fastbreak points after forcing Millersville into 16 turnovers.

Redshirt freshman Carly Gallagher led five Millersville players in double-figures, scoring 16 points off the bench. Junior forward Aurielle Mosley, last year' NCAA Division II rebounding leader, posted a double-double with 13 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.
