CAL U NOTES
• Cal U returns to action this weekend following a 26-3 loss last Thursday night to nationally-ranked St. Cloud State (Minn.). Meanwhile, C.W. Post opened the year with a 13-7 loss on an interception return for a touchdown in overtime last Saturday against American International (Mass.).
• In a season-opener with two nationally-ranked teams, the Vulcans suffered a 26-3 loss to St. Cloud State last week. Junior defensive back
Rontez Miles established a career high with 14 tackles (11 solo) and linebackers
Brian Justice and
Spencer Lynn finished with a combined 17 stops (eight solo) in their first career starts. Cal U was limited to only 56 rushing yards and 206 yards of total offense in the loss. In his first game with the program, redshirt junior quarterback
Peter Lalich passed for 150 yards on 20-of-34 attempts and connected with senior wide receiver
Thomas Mayo seven times for a game-high 80 yards.
• This is the second all-time meeting between the Vulcans and Pioneers. Last year, Cal U claimed a 40-13 victory on the road in the first-ever meeting.
• The all-time winningest coach in program history,
Bryan Collins enters his 14th season as head coach of the Pioneers. While a member of the Northeast-10 Conference, he guided C.W. Post to four outright league championships and three NCAA Playoff appearances. Last year, the Pioneers posted their best finish as members of the PSAC by finishing 7-4 overall and 5-2 in PSAC East play.
• In its third year in the PSAC, C.W. Post finished with a 7-4 overall record and a 5-2 mark in divisional play. The Pioneers return preseason All-American linebacker
Billy O'Connor after he led the PSAC with an impressive 125 tackles (58 solo) last season. An All-PSAC East Second-Team selection in 2010, he has totaled 226 tackles (114 solo) with 13.0 tackles for loss (TFL) in his career. C.W. Post also returns senior linebacker
Ronnie Modik, who was fourth in the league last year with 104 stops (39 solo). On offense, the Pioneers feature a new quarterback in redshirt freshman
Steven Laurino following the departure of All-PSAC East quarterback
Erik Anderwkavich. Last week, Laurino completed 12-of-21 attempts for 107 yards with three interceptions, including one that ended the game in overtime. Laurino also rushed for a team-high 82 yards last Saturday against American International. C.W. Post has depth in its one-back offense with
Anthony Brunetti and
Thomas Beverly returning in 2011. Last year, Brunetti finished with nearly 600 yards and 10 touchdowns after Beverly rushed for over 1,000 yards as a freshman in 2009. C.W. Post returns two of its top three receivers from last year in sophomore
Joe Botti and junior
Grayson Laurino, the older brother of Steven. Both caught six touchdown passes in 2010 and Botti displayed big-play ability by averaging over 20 yards per reception. Grayson Laurino also serves as the punter for C.W. Post for the third-straight year.
• Cal U features an astounding four players on active rosters with NFL teams this opening weekend. Former wide receiver/special teams standout
Dominique Curry made the 53-man roster with the St. Louis Rams for a second-straight year, while cornerback
Terrence Johnson is on the active roster with the Indianapolis Colts. Rookie quarterback
Josh Portis made the roster with the Seattle Seahawks and rookie cornerback
Tommie Campbell is with the Tennessee Titans after being a seventh-round selection in the 2011 NFL Draft.
• C.W. Post is the only opponent Cal U has ever faced from the state of New York. However, head coach John Luckhardt has posted a career 12-7 record against schools from the Empire State while coaching at Washington & Jefferson and Cal U.
• Cal U head coach John Luckhardt has established a winning tradition at Cal U. That tradition has carried over into games against teams from the PSAC East. In the last nine seasons, the Vulcans hold a combined 20-5 record (.800) against PSAC East opponents.
• Over the first two weeks of the season, Cal U opponents have traveled over a combined 2,700 miles (round trip). Last week, St. Cloud State (Minn.) traveled over 16 hours both ways, while C.W. Post traveled over 400 miles and seven hours to arrive at California, Pa.
• One of the longest streaks in school history ended last week when the Vulcans were held without a touchdown against St. Cloud State. Cal U had previously scored a touchdown in 85-straight games, dating back to a 35-0 loss at Shippensburg on Nov. 11, 2003 when current Green Bay Packer
John Kuhn rushed for three touchdowns.
• The Vulcans have won 62 of their last 75 games (.827) overall, dating back to the start of the 2005 season. Cal U has posted a 42-6 (.875) record in regular-season games dating back to the 2006 campaign.
• The Vulcans feature three players from state of New York on their roster this season. Senior defensive lineman
Kevin Crawford (Bronx) and junior offensive lineman
Kevin Douglas (Brooklyn) are from the boroughs of New York City, while senior running back
Edwin Gowins is from Bellport, N.Y., which is located on Long Island.
• Since 2005, Cal U has posted an impressive 10-3 record in games following a loss. The Vulcans have lost back-to-back games three times during that span with two occasions being a loss in the NCAA Playoffs and the season-opener the following year.
• Junior defensive back
Rontez Miles, a preseason D2Football.com First-Team All-American, is tied for the PSAC lead in tackles after the first week of the season. The 6-1 junior established a career high with 14 tackles (11 solo) in the loss to St. Cloud State last Thursday. A two-time All-PSAC West selection, Miles is the first player to register double-digit tackles in a game since
Brett Diamond made 10 stops against IUP midway through last year.
• For the second week in a row, Cal U will face a team that relies heavily on a no-huddle spread offense. Last week, the Vulcans allowed 205 rushing yards and 406 yards of total offense to a St. Cloud State offense that was directed by sophomore
Phillip Klaphake, who set the single-season school record for total offense in 2010. However, C.W. Post features more of a zone-read rushing offense and has a first-year starter at quarterback in redshirt freshman in
Steven Laurino, who replaces
Erik Anderwkavich - an All-PSAC East selection last year.
• In the season-opening loss last week to St. Cloud State, nine players made their first career starts for Cal U. On offense, redshirt junior
Peter Lalich made his first start since playing for Virginia in 2008, while seniors
Rishaw Johnson (Ole Miss) and
Thomas Mayo (Concord) also made their first starts for the Vulcans in their first game with the program. Junior
Levi Pardee and sophomore
Mike Williams also started on offense after seeing significant time as reserves last season. On defense, junior
Robby Green started at safety after playing in 26 games (six starts) for Alabama in 2008-09. Cal U debuted a pair of first-time starters at linebacker in redshirt freshman
Spencer Lynn and sophomore
Brian Justice and also featured a new kicker/punter in redshirt freshman
Cody Nuzzo.
• Following last week's loss, Cal U dropped from No. 12 to No. 22 in the AFCA Top 25. The Vulcans have been ranked for 17-consecutive weeks, including all 14 weeks last season, dating back to the final poll of 2009.
• This weekend's game features a pair of running backs that have rushed for over 1,000 yards in a season with their current team, but combined to rush for only 64 yards last week. Cal U junior running back
Lamont Smith led the team with 39 rushing yards after posting 1,166 yards last year in his first season with the program. C.W. Post junior
Thomas Beverly finished with just 25 yards in the season-opener after he rushed for 1,094 yards, scored 12 touchdowns and earned PSAC East Freshman of the Year in 2009.
