WEST CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 4) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team used goals from seven different players, including two from junior
Chris Moehler (Centreville, Va./Paul VI Catholic) and freshman
Jon Murphy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic), on Sunday afternoon to claim a 9-0 victory over Lincoln (Pa.) in the second day of the West Chester Tournament.
With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 2-0-1 this season after scoring only one combined goal in their first two games. The nine goals scored by Cal U is the highest single-game total since a 9-1 victory over Ohio Valley (W.Va.) in August 2009. Meanwhile, the Lions fall to 0-2-0 this year after opening the season at the tournament.
Playing with a two-man advantage due to Lincoln starting only nine players, Cal U jumped out to a quick 1-0 lead at the 1:26-mark when senior
Edin Sabic (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) scored an unassisted goal. The Vulcans added to the lead in the fourth minute when freshman
Brad Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) tallied his first career goal off an assist from senior
Brady Sanders (Level Green, Pa./Penn-Trafford), who increased the lead to 3-0 with a goal of his own at the 9:33-mark off a feed from freshman
Djamel Boudhar (Stuggart, Germany/Oscar-Partet).
Near the 12:00-mark, Moehler scored his first goal of the season off an assist from redshirt freshman
Kevin Helbig (Carnegie, Pa./Chartiers Valley). In the 24th minute, Murphy tallied his first career goal (unassisted) before junior
Paul Silvestrone (Vaughan, Ontario/Cardinal Center) registered a goal off a feed from sophomore
Christopher Karns (Mars, Pa./Mars) almost 10 minutes later. Cal U added to its lead before halftime when freshman
Tyler Woolum (Gahanna, Ohio/Gahanna Lincoln) scored his first career goal at the 42:56-mark, 7-0.
The Vulcans also played with nine players in the second half, scoring a pair of goals in the final 45 minutes. Moehler posted his second goal of the day off an assist from Boudhar in the 67th minute before Murphy followed with a goal off a feed from fellow freshman
Ian Cheek (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) at the 80:39-mark.
Redshirt senior
Charlie Dagnal (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton) and freshman
Shane Donovan (Pipersville, Pa./Central Bucks East) combined for the shutout with Dagnal making the only save for the Vulcans. For the second-straight year, Cal U has opened the season by posting three-consecutive shutouts.
For the game, the Vulcans out-shot the Lions by a 22-5 margin and held a narrow 3-2 advantage in corner kicks.
Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 7, by hosting Wheeling Jesuit at the new soccer facility near main campus (Orchard St./Pennsylvania Ave.). The first game at the state-of-the-art facility is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start.
