Volleyball splits on second day at FSU

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (Sept. 3) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team took a split on Saturday while competing at the Ferris State (Mich.) Invitational, earning a 3-0 win over Wisconsin-Parkside in the morning before dropping a 3-0 match to the host Bulldogs in the evening.

The Vulcans finished the season-opening weekend with a 3-1 record under first-year head coach Peter Letourneau.

Cal U opened the day with a 3-0 victory (25-19, 25-22, 25-18) against Wisconsin-Parkside, a member of Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). Junior Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) led the team with 11 kills and classmate Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) added eight kills, while redshirt junior Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) finished with seven kills. Junior Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) engineered the offense with 30 assists and tallied four kills, six digs and two blocks.

Sophomore Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) paced the team with eight digs and the trio of junior Ana Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Promove), Fromknecht and Harris each tallied six digs. Franz and junior Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) both recorded a team-high four blocks (all assists) in the win.

Against host Ferris State, the Vulcans suffered a 3-0 loss (20-25, 23-25, 17-25) on Saturday evening. Bielich and Franz both posted nine kills and Fromknecht and sophomore Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) combined for 31 assists. McMullen led the team with 13 digs, while Harris and Delaney finished with nine and eight digs, respectively. Almeida added seven digs and three service aces against the Bulldogs.

Cal U returns to action next weekend when it competes at the Minnesota Duluth Tournament on Sept. 9-10.
