Cal U battles Chestnut Hill to scoreless tie

WEST CHESTER, Pa. (Sept. 3) – Despite holding sizeable advantages in shots and corner kicks, the Vulcans battled to a 0-0 double-overtime tie with Chestnut Hill on Saturday evening in the first day of the West Chester Tournament.

With the tie, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team moves to 1-0-1 this season. Meanwhile, Chestnut Hill made its season debut and is 0-0-1 this year.

The Vulcans kept constant pressure on the Griffins, taking five shots each period before totaling a combined 10 shots in the two overtime periods. Overall, Cal U held a 20-6 advantage in shots and maintained a 9-1 edge in corner kicks.

After a scoreless 110 minutes, the game went to sudden victory on penalty kicks to determine a winner for tournament purposes. Cal U was unsuccessful on its first shootout attempt before senior Gavin Reid made a penalty kick to give Chestnut Hill the advantage in the tournament standings.

Redshirt senior goalkeeper Charlie Dagnal (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton) collected two saves to register his second-straight shutout, the first two of his career. Chestnut Hill goalkeeper Mike Goldstein finished with six saves in 110 minutes of action.

The Vulcans conclude play at the weekend tournament tomorrow, Sunday, Sept. 4, when they face Lincoln (Pa.) at 1:30 p.m.
