Edin Sabic (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep) and freshman
Ian Cheek (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) each scored goals on Wednesday evening, as the No. 21 Vulcans earned a 2-1 victory over Gannon at the new Soccer Facility in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team improves to 8-1-2 this season. The Vulcans also move into first place in the PSAC standings with 10 points behind a 3-1-1 mark in league action. Meanwhile, the Golden Knights fall to 4-5-1 overall with a 0-2-0 record in conference play.
After a scoreless first period, the Vulcans took a 1-0 lead in the 67th minute when Sabic scored his team-leading fifth goal of the season off assists from freshmen
Jon Murphy (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) and
Djamel Boudhar (Stuggart, Germany/Oscar-Partet). Cal U added to its lead at the 79:49-mark when Cheek scored his first career goal on a header with an assist from freshman
Brad Colvin (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), 2-0. Gannon trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the 88th minute when sophomore Faycal Benjelloun scored off a feed from freshman Robbie Bennett.
Redshirt senior goalkeeper
Charlie Dagnal (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton) recorded his eighth shutout of the season after making one save in 90 minutes of action. Gannon's goalkeeper Michael Kickel tallied seven saves in the loss.
The Vulcans out-shot the Golden Knights by a 16-10 margin and posted a 7-0 edge in corner kicks on Wednesday.
Cal U continues league play on Sunday, Oct. 2, when it travels to Erie, Pa., to face No. 4 Mercyhurst at 1 p.m.
