CAL U NOTES
• Cal U returns to the road with another lengthy road trip following last weekend's 40-13 victory over Clarion in the PSAC West-opener. Meanwhile, Lock Haven remains winless this year after suffering a 42-3 loss at home to defending-PSAC Champion Mercyhurst last Saturday.

• After a scoreless first quarter, the Vulcans scored 27-unanswered points en route to claiming a 40-13 win over Clarion. Redshirt junior quarterback Peter Lalich finished with 350 passing yards on 23-of-32 attempts with three touchdowns. Senior wide receiver Thomas Mayo posted 164 yards and two touchdowns on seven receptions against the Golden Eagles. Sophomore linebacker Brian Justice led the defense with 11 tackles (seven solo) and 2.5 TFL, while senior defensive lineman Steve Santia set a career high with seven stops (three solo) and scored a touchdown on a 35-yard fumble recovery.

• The Vulcans and Bald Eagles are meeting for the 68th time this weekend. Cal U has won seven-straight and nine of the last 11 meetings against Lock Haven, including a 58-0 victory last year.

• After serving as an assistant coach with the Bald Eagles for eight years, John Allen is in his first season as head coach at Lock Haven. He recently served as the coordinator of player development at Penn State from 2008-11 after serving as head coach of the Berlin Thunder of NFL Europe in 2007. In his initial stop at Lock Haven, Allen served as both a position coach (wide receivers, defensive backs, quarterbacks) and coordinator (special teams, recruiting, offensive)

• Lock Haven enters this weekend on a 35-game losing streak with their last win coming in the final game of the 2007 season (Clarion; 17-14). The Bald Eagles have scored only a combined nine points in the last two games and rank 13th in the PSAC in scoring offense (13.0 points/game).  Sophomore Brandon Brader rushed for over 100 yards in the first two games of the season and ranks third in the league with 107.0 yards per game. After starting three games last year, senior quarterback Jarryd Burkett has completed over 52 percent (44-of-84) of his passes and thrown for 558 yards with two touchdowns and four interceptions in three games. The combination of senior Devin Sims and sophomore Jesse Hoover have combined for nearly 25 receptions and 400 yards with Sims averaging nearly 20 yards per catch. The Bald Eagles also rank 13th in the PSAC in scoring defense (35.0 points/game) and rushing defense (176.5 yards/game). Senior linebacker Ibrahim Smith, a former running back, leads Lock Haven with 22 tackles (16 solo) after redshirting last season. Sophomore defensive back Raymond Mosby has added 22 stops (19 solo) and one interception, while junior defensive lineman Ben Snyder has tallied 12 tackles (11 solo) and leads the team with 3.0 tackles for loss (TFL). The Bald Eagles feature one of the most reliable kickers in the PSAC this season in senior Noah Heimer, who is second in the league in field-goals (2.00 per game) and third in the league in field-goal percentage (80.0 percent).  After leading the team in receiving last year, senior Jay Hartman serves as the team's primary kick and punt returner this season, posting over 200 return yards in three games.

• Senior wide receiver Thomas Mayo has rapidly become one of the elite receivers in the PSAC after being a two-time All-American at Concord. The 6-2 senior leads NCAA Division II and ranks third in all NCAA divisions with 156.25 receiving yards/game and is tied for seventh in D-II with 8.00 receptions/game; both marks lead the PSAC. He has posted three-consecutive 100-yard receiving games, including 201 yards against East Stroudsburg to become only the third player in school history with 200 receiving yards in a game.

• Following last week's comeback win, Cal U moved up one spot to No. 16 in the AFCA Top 25 poll. The Vulcans have been ranked for 20-consecutive weeks, including all 14 weeks last season, dating back to the final poll of 2009.

• Junior running back Lamont Smith, an All-PSAC West First-Team selection in 2010, has eclipsed the 100-yard mark in each of the last two games for the Vulcans. After rushing for only 79 combined yards the first two weeks, the 5-10 junior rushed for 107 yards at East Stroudsburg on Sept. 17 before posting 155 yards on only 17 carries (9.1 yards/attempt) last week against Clarion. Last season, Smith surpassed the century mark in six-consecutive games before suffering an injury against Slippery Rock when he set a career high with 194 rushing yards.

• The Vulcans feature a group of 21 seniors in 2011. The senior class has compiled a record of 36-9 and started a combined 252 games. Senior defensive lineman Marcus Cook leads the team with 31-consecutive starts dating back to the 2009 season.

• Redshirt junior quarterback Peter Lalich, the two-time reigning PSAC West Offensive Player of the Week, has passed for over 300 yards in consecutive games. The 6-5 quarterback passed for 384 yards and two scores on Sept. 17 at East Stroudsburg before throwing for 350 yards and three touchdowns last week versus Clarion. He is the first Cal U quarterback to pass for 300-plus yards in back-to-back weeks since Josh Portis in the 2009 NCAA Playoffs (West Liberty, Northwest Missouri State). Lalich is also the first Vulcan to earn weekly laurels from the PSAC in consecutive weeks since quarterback Joe Ruggiero in 2006 (Oct. 9, 16).

• Former Cal U All-American and current Indianapolis Colts cornerback Terrence Johnson saw significant action against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Sunday Night Football. Johnson, who listed as the second-string left cornerback on the Colts' depth chart, finished second on the team with five tackles. He has appeared in all three games this season with Indianapolis, making his NFL debut in the season-opener at Reliant Stadium versus the Houston Texans.

• Senior Erik Harris, a three-year starter at  defensive back, has been a key player on special teams throughout his career. As a true freshman, he made 15 tackles on special teams before leading the team with 19 stops on special teams in 2009. In addition to his starting role as a defensive back this season, Harris has also assumed the role of punter on occasion and is averaging 37.0 yards per punt. Utilizing his athleticism, he also has rushed twice for 15 yards while lining up as the punter on fourth-down situations.

• In only his second career game, freshman offensive lineman Jack Abercrombie made the start last week at center against Clarion. Abercrombie became the first true freshman for the Vulcans to start a game this season and became the first true freshman to start on the offensive line since Nick Piccirillo against Cheyney on Sept. 15, 2007. Through the first four games this season, Cal U has started only six offensive lineman with the same players starting all four games at left tackle, left guard, right guard and right tackle.

• In his first season as a starter, senior defensive lineman Steve Santia recorded a career day last week against Clarion. He finished the game with a career-high seven tackles (three solo) and added 2.0 TFL at Adamson Stadium. The highlight of the game for the 6-0, 260-pound senior came in the second quarter when he forced, recovered and returned a fumble 35 yards for a touchdown that extended the Cal U lead to 14-0 with 4:23 left before halftime. It marked the first fumble return for a touchdown by the Vulcans since Josh Kemp scored on a fumble against Lock Haven on Sept. 30, 2006.

• After seeing significant time at cornerback and on special teams in the first three games, freshman Jeff Knox, Jr. made his debut on offense last week against Clarion as a short-yardage running back near the end zone. Knox finished the game with two carries, both 1-yard touchdown runs. On defense, the 6-2 freshman from Pittsburgh has made 11 tackles (three solo) with two pass break-ups this season.

• After appearing in only one game as a redshirt freshman in 2010, sophomore linebacker Brian Justice registered double-digit tackles last week for the second time this season. Justice finished with 11 stops (seven solo) and a career-high 2.5 TFL against Clarion. He enters the weekend leading the team and ranking fourth in the PSAC with 9.2 tackles/game.
