Cal U claims win over Edinboro, 3-1

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 23) – In a meeting of two NCAA Tournament programs from last year, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team registered a 3-1 win (25-15, 25-17, 22-25, 25-19) over Edinboro on Friday night at Hamer Hall in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West action.

With the victory, the Vulcans extended their win streak to seven matches and improved to 12-2 overall with a perfect 5-0 record in league play. Cal U has now posted an impressive 64-4 record at Hamer Hall dating back to the start of the 2006 season. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots fall to 11-3 this season with a 4-1 mark in conference action.

Junior Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) registered a team-high 12 kills, while freshman Julia Muzy (Rio de Janeiro, Brazil/Liceu Franco Brasileiro) and junior Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) finished with 10 and eight kills, respectively. Juniors Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) both added six kills and combined for 14 blocks with Wilson establishing a career high with eight blocks on Friday.

Junior Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) collected 20 assists and two blocks, while fellow setter Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) registered 18 assists at Hamer Hall. Senior libero Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) led the defensive effort with 12 digs and also posted five service aces against the Fighting Scots. Muzy and Harris added eight and seven digs, respectively.

The Vulcans return to action on Tuesday, Sept. 27, when they travel to face Alderson-Broaddus in a non-conference match, starting at 6 p.m.
