Vulcans sweep Southern Indiana, Urbana

BIG RAPIDS, Mich. (Sept. 2) – The Vulcans collected a pair of season-opening victories on Friday morning at the Ferris State (Mich.) Invitational, claiming 3-0 wins against Southern Indiana and Urbana (Ohio).

Under first-year head coach Peter Letourneau, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team opens the year at 2-0. The Vulcans continue play in Michigan tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 3, when they face Wisconsin-Parkside and the host Bulldogs.

Cal U opened play at the tournament with a 3-0 win (25-15, 25-19, 30-28) against Southern Indiana, a member of Great Lakes Valley Conference (GLVC). Sophomore Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) paced the offensive effort with a career-high 14 kills, while senior Katya Kopanarova (Sofia, Bulgaria/81 Victor Hugo) added 10 kills and three blocks. Junior Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) and redshirt junior Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) finished with nine and eight kills, respectively.

Junior Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) directed the offense with a career-high 36 assists and registered six digs and four blocks (one solo). Senior Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) finished with a team-high 11 digs and posted two service aces.

In the second match of the day, the Vulcans recorded a 3-0 sweep (25-19, 25-12, 25-14) against Urbana, another GLVC member. The trio of Fromknecht, junior Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) and Kopanarova each led the team with five kills. Fromknecht also posted 23 assists, three blocks and a career-high five service aces. McMullen and Kopanarova collected 15 and nine digs, respectively.

Letourneau previously was the head coach for six years at Frostburg State, a Division III program in Frostburg, Md.
