CALIFORNIA (Sept. 17) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team collected victories over Cheyney and Kutztown on Saturday at Hamer Hall in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.
With the victories, the Vulcans improve to 10-2 overall following a perfect 3-0 mark in league play this weekend.
In the first match of the day, Cal U cruised to a 3-0 sweep (25-6, 25-11, 25-8) against Cheyney. Freshman
Renee Helmer (Oakville, Ontario/Abbey Park) tallied a team-high nine kills on 11 attempts for a .636 hitting percentage and collected six service aces versus the Wolves. Junior
Ana Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Promove) and sophomore
Gaby Follmer (St. Louis, Mo./Timberland) both added eight kills in the win.
Sophomore
Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) directed the offense with a career-high 31 assists, while junior
Abigail Gaiotti (Canton, Pa./Homeschooled) finished with a team-high five digs and recorded four service aces.
The Vulcans closed play on Saturday evening with a 3-1 victory (25-8, 23-25, 25-19, 25-14) over Kutztown. Junior
Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) recorded a double-double with 13 kills and a career-high 30 digs, while classmates
Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and
Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) each posted a team-high 14 kills.
Junior setter
Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Freund engineered the Vulcans' attack with 30 and 21 assists, respectively. Senior
Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) finished with 19 digs and tallied a career-high eight service aces against the Golden Bears.
The Vulcans continue PSAC play on Tuesday, Sept. 20, when they travel to face IUP at the Kovalchick Convention and Athletic Complex. The match is scheduled to start at 7 p.m.
