No. 12 Vulcans fall to Lock Haven, 3-1

CALIFORNIA (Sept. 17) – The No. 12 Vulcans allowed their first goals of the season on Saturday night in a 3-1 loss against Lock Haven at the new Soccer Facility in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team falls to 6-1-1 overall and 1-1-0 in league play. Meanwhile, Lock Haven improves to 3-1-0 overall with a 2-1-0 mark in conference action.

After a scoreless first period, the Bald Eagles took a 1-0 lead in the 59th minute when senior Martin Pletz tallied his second goal of the year off a feed from classmate Kevin Wolfe. It marked the first goal allowed by the Vulcans this season, a stretch that included seven-plus games and over 713 minutes.

Lock Haven then added to its lead at the 67:39-mark when senior Billy Pasukinis registered a goal off a pass from classmate Greg Shertzer. Less than three minutes later, the Bald Eagles expanded their lead to 3-0 when Shertzer posted his third goal of the season with an assist from freshman Kyle Winey. Cal U was able to trim the deficit to 3-1 in the 75th minute when junior Chris Moehler (Centreville, Va./Paul VI Catholic) recorded his team-leading fourth goal of the season off a feed from classmate Paul Silvestrone (Vaughan, Ontario/Cardinal Center).

Redshirt senior goalkeeper Charlie Dagnal (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton) finished with three saves in the loss, while Lock Haven's Chad Badorf tallied four saves in 90 minutes to earn the win.

The teams combined for only 14 shots with Lock Haven holding an 8-6 advantage after Cal U managed only one shot in the first period. The Vulcans were able to record a 10-3 edge in corner kicks, including eight in the second half.

Cal U continues PSAC play on Tuesday, Sept. 20, when it travels to West Chester for a 2 p.m. start.
