CALIFORNIA (Sept. 10) – Senior
Edwin Gowins (Bellport, N.Y./Bellport) ran for three touchdowns, classmate
Thomas Mayo (Reston, Va./South Lakes) caught a pair of scores and the defense recovered four fumbles on Saturday evening, as the No. 22 California University of Pennsylvania football team registered a 41-13 victory over C.W. Post at Adamson Stadium.
With the win, the Vulcans move to 1-1 this season and have now won 11 of 14 games following a loss since 2005. Cal U has won each of the meetings against C.W. Post in the last two years by a combined score of 81-26. Meanwhile, the Pioneers drop 0-2 this season after suffering an overtime loss in their season-opener last week.
In only his second game with the program, Mayo amassed 180 yards and two touchdowns (43, 50) on only six receptions (30.0 yards per reception). His yardage ranks as the sixth-highest single-game total in school history and is the most since former All-American A.J. Jackson finished with 193 yards in the 2008 Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship.
As a team, the Vulcans finished with 235 rushing yards after posting only 56 yards last week in the loss to St. Cloud State. Gowins led the team with 93 rushing yards and three touchdowns (3, 7, 9) on 17 attempts, while sophomore running back
Trey Johnson (Rochester, Pa./Rochester) added 84 yards on only nine carries (9.3 yards per attempt).
On its first drive of the game, redshirt junior quarterback
Peter Lalich (Springfield, Va./West Springfield) connected with Mayo for a 43-yard touchdown before Gowins capped the next Cal U drive with a three-yard score to stretch the lead to 14-0 with 9:26 remaining in the first quarter.
After forcing a three-and-out, junior
Rontez Miles (Braddock, Pa./Woodland Hills) blocked a Pioneers' punt and classmate
Mario Washington (Boiling Springs, N.C./Crest) returned the punt 38 yards for a touchdown with 7:43 left in the opening quarter. Late in the first quarter, C.W. Post answered with a rushing touchdown by junior Thomas Beverly before senior defensive lineman
Thomas Mulabah (Sterling, Va./Parkview) blocked the PAT kick attempt, 21-6.
Cal U stretched its lead to 28-6 with another rushing touchdown by Gowins in the second quarter before Lalich found Mayo for a 50-yard score with 8:32 left before halftime, 34-6.
Lalich completed 16-of-25 attempts for 272 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, including one as time expired in the first half.
In the second half, Cal U took a 41-6 lead early in the third quarter when Gowins scored his final touchdown of the game. The Pioneers posted the final score of the game midway through the fourth quarter when Beverly posted a four-yard touchdown run with 6:47 remaining in the game.
Sophomore linebacker
Brian Justice (Cape Coral, Fla./Cape Coral) led the team with 12 tackles (four solo) and registered 2.0 tackles for loss (TFL), 1.0 sack, one forced fumble and two quarterback hurries. Sophomore defensive lineman
Darnell Harding (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) finished with six stops (four solo), including a career-high 3.5 TFL, and senior defensive back
Shawn Anderson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) added five tackles (four solo) and one forced fumble.
Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 17, with its first road game of the season when it travels to face East Stroudsburg for a 6 p.m. kickoff. Last year, the Vulcans posted a 45-20 win over the Warriors in the only the sixth all-time meeting between the two schools.
Notes:
The two teams combined for nine turnovers (seven fumbles, two interceptions) … In the win, Cal U converted only 2-of-12 attempts on third down … C.W. Post was limited to only 211 yards of total offense and managed only one drive longer than six plays (missed field goal)
