Carley Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) registered her first career hat trick on Thursday afternoon, as the No. 12 Vulcans claimed a 4-0 season-opening victory against Alderson-Broaddus at Roadman Park.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team opens the year at 1-0 and has now won four-consecutive season-openers. Meanwhile, the Battlers drop to 0-1 this season.
Work, who was an All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) selection last year, finished with three goals on Thursday after scoring six goals in each of the last two seasons. She gave the Vulcans an early 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when she tallied her first goal of the game off an assist from freshman

Work completed the hat trick in the 83rd minute off another feed from Hogan, her second assist of the game.
Cal U dominated field position on Thursday, out-shooting Alderson-Broaddus by a 26-4 margin and holding an overwhelming 18-0 advantage in corner kicks.

Ashley Magruda (Belle Vernon, Pa./Belle Vernon) registered the shutout in her first career start, collecting three saves in 90 minutes. Battlers' goalkeeper Kate Laird finished with 11 saves in the loss.
The Vulcans return to action on Saturday, Sept. 3, when they travel to face Charleston (W.Va.) at 4 p.m. Cal U has won each of the last three meetings against the Golden Eagles via shutout, including a 1-0 win last season.
