Vulcans post win at Alderson-Broaddus, 1-0

PHILIPPI, W.Va. (Sept. 1) – With a late second-half goal, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team earned a 1-0 season-opening win at Alderson-Broaddus on Thursday evening.

With the win, the Vulcans are 1-0 this season and have won the last four season-openers against the Battlers by a combined score of 13-4. Meanwhile, Alderson-Broaddus opens the year at 0-1.

After a scoreless first half, Cal U took a 1-0 lead in the 79th minute on a goal by sophomore Ryan Slaby (Pittsburgh, Pa./Central Catholic) with an assist from junior Paul Silvestrone (Vaughan, Ontario/Cardinal Center).

Redshirt senior Charlie Dagnal (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton) registered the win and his first career shutout after making two saves in 90 minutes of action on Thursday. A-B goalkeeper Josh Teets also registered two saves in the loss.

The Vulcans finished with a slim 10-8 advantage in shots and both teams attempted three corner kicks.

Cal U returns to action this weekend when it faces Chestnut Hill (Pa.) and Lincoln (Pa.) at the West Chester Tournament on Sept. 3-4.
