Vulcans win debut in new facility, 79-52

CALIFORNIA (Dec. 3) – In the first-ever game at the new Convocation Center, five players scored in double-figures for the California University of Pennsylvania women's basketball team on Saturday afternoon in a 79-52 victory against Mansfield in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.

With the win, the Vulcans improve to 3-2 this season with a 2-1 mark in league play. Meanwhile, the Mountaineers drop to 1-3 overall and remain winless in conference action at 0-3.

Senior guard Danielle Luckett (Chicago, Ill./James Hubert Blake (Md.)) scored a team-high 15 points and also led the team with five assists. She made 5-of-10 from the floor and shot five-of-eight from the free-throw line, while collecting six rebounds. Luckett has scored in double-digits three times this year and ranks second on the team in scoring.

Sophomore Elena Antonenko (Moscow, Russia/State University of Physical Education) established a career high with 14 points on 7-of-11 shooting off the bench. The 6-2 forward also finished with six rebounds and two blocks against Mansfield. Senior forward Amy Johns (McKeesport, Pa./McKeesport) posted 11 points, while freshman guard Chelsea McKnight (Grove City, Ohio/Harvest Prep) and junior guard Megan Kermond (Adelaide, Australia/Unley) both scored 10 points. McKnight, who scored the first basket in the new facility, led the team with seven rebounds and four steals.

Cal U, who led for the entirety of the game, jumped out to an 8-0 lead in the first two-plus minutes. Leading by five points midway through the first half, the Vulcans scored 11-straight points to stretch their lead to 27-11 on a three-pointer by McKnight with 7:38 left before halftime. Cal U led by as many as 22 points, 39-17, in the first half before taking a 39-21 lead into the break.

In the early portion of the second half, the Vulcans mounted a 10-2 rally to take a 56-33 lead with 12:27 remaining. Cal U maintained a sizeable double-digit lead throughout the second half, stretching the lead to as many as 29 points, 77-48, in the closing minutes.

After shooting nearly 50 percent in the second half, Cal U shot 42.5 percent (31-of-73) for the game from the field. The Vulcans registered a season-high 48 rebounds with a staggering 23 offensive rebounds that led to 22 second-chance points. Cal U also collected 13 steals and scored 25 points off turnovers on Saturday.

Senior guard Mallory Moore scored a game-high 19 points on 8-of-15 shooting in the loss. Mansfield's Julia Stevenson finished with 12 points and seven rebounds.

The Vulcans continue their weekend homestand tomorrow, Sunday, Dec. 4, when they host Bloomsburg at the new Convocation Center for a 1 p.m. start.
