CAL U NOTES
• Cal U concludes the regular season this weekend when it travles to face Cheyney. The Vulcans scored 24 points in the second quarter to claim a 34-28 victory over Edinboro last week on Senior Day. Meanwhile, the Wolves suffered a 42-27 loss at C.W. Post in the final week of divisional play.
• Cal U leads the all-time series that started in 1972 by a 14-1 margin. After losing the initial meeting, the Vulcans have won 14-straight games, including a 57-6 victory against the Wolves last season.
• The Vulcans secured a share of their seventh-straight PSAC West title last week with a 34-28 victory over Edinboro. Redshirt junior quarterback
Peter Lalich finished with 289 passing yards and three touchdowns on 21-of-34 attempts. The Cal U defense limited the Fighting Scots to a season-low 37 rushing yards on 25 attempts. In the victory, the Vulcans registered five sacks with four coming in the second half. Senior defensive lineman
Thomas Mulabah tied his career highs with nine tackles (seven solo), 3.0 TFL and 2.0 sacks against Edinboro. Mulabah now holds the
all-time school record with 33.0 TFL.
• After serving as the Wolves' defensive coordinator for the last three years,
Ken Lockard was named the interim head coach in May 2010. While with Cheyney, he has coached four All-PSAC East selections and two players that participated in the All-American Bowl. He began his coaching carer at New Mexico Highlands and later spent time as the offensive line coach at Santa Barbara City College. Lockard also served two seasons as the outside linebackers coach at Lehigh.
• Featuring 31 returning lettermen and 12 returning starters, Cheyney won its season-opener against Lincoln before losing nine-straight games. The Wolves feature one of the conference's top defensive linemen in senior
Tim Hume, who enters the weekend tied for the league lead with 19.5 tackles for loss (TFL). Hume also has registered 56 tackles (39 solo) and 6.5 sacks this year. Freshman linebacker
Isaiah Fleming leads the team and ranks seventh in the PSAC with 82 tackles (51 solo), while junior defensive back
Cory Brown has made 68 stops (35 solo). Freshman
Adrese Hicks and senior
Stan Banks are tied for the team lead with three interceptions this season. Offensively, sophomore
Marcus Jones leads the rushing attack with 572 yards after rushing for nearly 1,000 yards last year. In his second year as the starter, senior quarterback
Chris Anderson has thrown for 884 yards and six touchdowns with 10 interceptions while completing only 47.2 percent of his passes (85-of-180). Senior
Tyler Wilkinson is averaging 33.4 yards on 63 punts and has placed 10 punts inside the opponents' 20-yard line. As a team, the Wolves have attempted only five field goals this season.
• Despite not playing in the PSAC Championship this weekend, Cal U accomplished an unprecedented feat during divisional play this season. The Vulcans became the first program in conference history to win at least a share of seven-consecutive divisional titles. Cal U was previously tied with West Chester (1969-74) for the league record with a divisional crown in six-straight years.
• Two weeks ago, Cal U wasn't featured in the initial NCAA Super Region One rankings. Following a 28-14 win on the road at IUP, the Vulcans moved up to eighth in the regional rankings with an outside chance of earning a berth to the NCAA Playoffs. This week, Cal U catapulted up to fourth in the rankings with a win against Edinboro and several upsets around the region. The NCAA Selection Committee will select six teams from the region, which is comprised of the PSAC, WVIAC and CIAA, on Sunday night to participate in the NCAA Playoffs.
• Cal U has won 13 of its last 15 games in November since the start of the 2007 season. In the previous decade from 1997-2006, the Vulcans struggled down the stretch of the season by posting only a 6-14 record (.300).
• The Vulcans feature a special group of 19 seniors in 2011. The class has collectively posted a 41-12 overall record (.774) over the last four years and an impressive 26-2 mark (.929) in PSAC West games. Combined, the 2011 seniors have started an astounding 301 career games.
• Former Cal U cornerback and current Tennessee Titans special teams standout
Tommie Campbell is listed on the 2012 Pro Bowl ballot. Last year, Campbell played all 12 games with the Vulcans before being selected by the Titans in the seventh round of the NFL Draft. The Aliquippa native has played in all eight games this year for Tennessee and recorded eight tackles (four solo) - all on special teams. Fans can vote to send Campbell as a rookie to the Pro Bowl in Honolulu on Jan. 29 by visiting NFL.com.
• Junior running back
Lamont Smith posted his sixth 100-yard rushing game of the season, and 12th of his career, in last week's win over Edinboro. The Vulcans are now 12-0 over the last two seasons when Smith eclipses the 100-yard mark. The former Central Catholic standout enters the weekend ranked fifth in the PSAC in rushing at 96.2 yards/game and is only 38 yards shy of becoming the fourth player in school history to rush for 1,000 yards in back-to-back seasons (
Wesley Cates,
Antoine Bagwell,
Daine Williams).
• Senior
Thomas Mulabah was named PSAC West Defensive Player of the Week following his record-breaking performance against Edinboro. He led the team and tied his career high with nine tackles (seven solo) and registered 3.0 TFL and 2.0 sacks, both of which tied career highs. Mulabah also broke the school's all-time record with 33.0 TFL, surpassing the previous mark of 31.5 set by
Willie Walker (2006-09). A three-year starter, he has established a career high with 51 tackles (23 solo) this season, while also registering 9.5 TFL, 4.0 sacks, one interception, three fumble recoveries and two blocked kicks.
• Senior
Thomas Mayo has become one of the top playmakers in his first season in the PSAC. The 6-2 wide receiver ranks second in the league in both receiving yards and receiving touchdowns, while also ranking third in receptions. Last week, Mayo finished with 87 yards and two touchdowns on four catches. He has now caught a pair of touchdowns five times this season. Mayo, who is the fifth 1,000-yard receiver in school history, is now tied for 16th all-time in NCAA Division II history with 41 touchdown receptions.
• Senior defensive lineman
Marcus Cook has established himself as one of the most durable players in school history. Since starting the season-opener in 2009, Cook has made 37-consecutive starts and earned All-PSAC West Second-Team honors. Former teammate
Willie Walker, the 2009 PSAC West Defensive Player of the Year, set the school record with 54-straight starts from 2006-09. A native of Cincinnati, Cook has recorded 82 tackles (35 solo), 17.0 TFL and 9.0 sacks in his career.
• A preseason All-American, junior tight end
Blake Williamson established career highs and led the team last week with seven receptions and 106 yards - the first 100-yard game of his career. Williamson picked up first downs on four of his seven catches, including a 43-yard reception on a 3rd-and-13 from the Vulcans' 15-yard line. For the season, the 6-3 junior has posted career highs with 25 catches and 330 yards with one touchdown.
• Senior
Erik Harris has developed into one of the top defensive backs in school history. He ranks among the school's all-time leaders with 214 tackles (123 solo) despite playing his freshman year primarily on special teams. The former New Oxford standout is the first Cal U player to reach the 200-tackle milestone since linebackers
Brian Mohr (2004-07) and
Josh Zunic (2004-07). Harris, who has served as the team's primary punter this year, is also the Vulcans' active leader with eight career interceptions.
• Redshirt junior quarterback
Peter Lalich is quickly ascending the single-season record book in 2011. He ranks second in the PSAC with 2,735 passing yards and is on pace to become the third 3,000-yard passer in school history (
Josh Portis,
Kevin McCabe). Lalich has also thrown for 21 touchdowns this year after recording five games with a season-high three scores.
