LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Nov. 12) – The Vulcans captured their fifth Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Championship in the last seven years on Saturday night, as they posted a 3-1 win (26-24, 25-22, 19-25, 25-22) over Lock Haven at Thomas Fieldhouse.
With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 31-4 this season and earns the league's automatic qualifier to the NCAA Tournament. The Vulcans entered the weekend as the top seed in the Atlantic Region and will make their seventh-consecutive appearance in the NCAA Tournament next week. The NCAA will announce the field for the tournament tomorrow night, Sunday, Nov. 13, with a webcast selection show on NCAA.com. Meanwhile, the Bald Eagles fall to 20-9 overall.
Junior
Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) registered a team-high 19 kills, her third-highest total of the year, on 42 attempts. She also tallied her ninth double-double of the year after posting 17 digs on Saturday night. Following the match, Harris was selected PSAC Tournament MVP after posting 44 kills and 37 digs in victories over Gannon, West Chester and Lock Haven.
Sophomore
Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) and senior
Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) controlled the Cal U offense by combining for 39 assists. Junior middle hitter
Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) also contributed 12 kills and two blocks in the victory.
In addition to Harris, sophomore
Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) and senior
Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) tallied 14 and 10 digs, respectively. Freund and Delaney both collected three service aces against the Bald Eagles on Saturday.
