CALIFORNIA (Nov. 1) – Three different players scored goals in the first period on Tuesday night, as the No. 4 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team registered a 3-0 victory against Shippensburg in the quarterfinals of the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament.
With the win, the top-seeded Vulcans improve to 16-0-2 this season and secure hosting rights for the remainder of the tournament. Cal U, who is a perfect 11-0-0 this year at home, has advanced to the semifinals in the PSAC Tournament in each of the past three seasons. The Vulcans continue play in the tournament on Friday, Nov. 4, when they face Edinboro for the second time in less than two weeks.
Cal U took an early 1-0 lead in the fourth minute on Tuesday when junior
Carley Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) posted her 17th goal of the season off an assist from freshman
Erin Hogan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver), who leads the team with nine assists this year. Work is now only two goals shy of tying the single-season school record of 19 shared by
Sherry Valera (1994) and
Amanda Heister (2009).
The Vulcans added to their lead at the 13:49-mark when senior
Chaning Wimer (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) scored on a header following a corner kick by junior
Kayla Fransko (Monongahela, Pa./Ringgold). Cal U stretched the lead to 3-0 in the 31st minute when Hogan tallied her second goal of the season off a feed from senior
Kristen Orrett (Pickering, Ontario/Pickering).
After nearly a scoreless second period, the Huskies avoided the shutout when sophomore Jamie Vaniver scored off an assist from senior Natalie Adams.
Senior goalkeeper
Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) earned her 15th win of the season after making one save in 90 minutes of action. Bloomsburg's Frances Nicoletti finished with seven saves in the losing effort.
Cal U out-shot Bloomsburg by a 25-2 margin after limiting the Huskies to only one shot attempt each period. The Vulcans also held a 4-1 edge in corner kicks.
Bloomsburg finishes the year with a 9-8-1 overall record under first-year head coach Paul Mark Huckett.
