SHIPPENSBURG (Oct. 7) – The Vulcans collected a pair victories over East Stroudsburg and host Shippensburg on Friday at Heiges Field House in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Crossover action.
With the wins, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 17-3 overall and 8-1 in league play. Under first-year head coach
Peter Letourneau, the Vulcans have won three-straight matches and 11 of their last 12 overall.
In their first match of the day, the Vulcans registered a 3-0 victory (25-12, 25-19, 25-20) against East Stroudsburg. Junior
Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) finished with 11 kills on a team-best .500 hitting percentage and sophomore
Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) also collected 11 kills against the Warriors. Junior
Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) added seven kills in the sweep.
Senior
Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) led the three players in double-digit digs with 18, while junior
Ana Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Promove) finished with 16 digs versus East Stroudsburg. Delaney registered her third-straight double-double in the match by tallying 11 digs to go along with her 11 kills.
After losing the first two sets, Cal U rallied to claim a 3-2 win (22-25, 21-25, 25-22, 25-17, 15-11) over the Red Raiders in the final match on Friday night. Redshirt junior
Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) recorded a season-high 19 kills on 31 attempts for a .484 hitting percentage, while Franz and Harris each finished with 13 kills at Shippensburg. Setters
Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) and
Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) directed the offense with 25 and 21 assists, respectively.
Harris registered a double-double (fifth of the season) by leading the Vulcans with 20 digs and Almeida established a career high with 18 digs. McMullen and Delaney finished with 15 and 14 digs, respectively, in the win. Franz also tallied a career-high 10 blocks against the Red Raiders.
Cal U continues PSAC Crossover play tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 8, when it travels to Millersville, Pa., to face Lock Haven and the host Marauders, starting at 12:30 p.m.
