INDIANA, Pa. (Oct. 3) – In a meeting of two nationally-ranked teams, the No. 3 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team battled to a 2-2 double-overtime tie in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play at No. 15 IUP while playing the final 28-plus minutes down one player.
With the tie, the Vulcans remain unbeaten this season at 7-0-2 overall with a 5-0-2 mark in league action. Cal U also extended its unbeaten streak against IUP to five games, dating back to the 2008 season. Meanwhile, the Crimson Hawks move to 7-1-2 this season behind a 5-1-2 record in conference play.
Cal U jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the eighth minute when senior
Breeanna Robinson (East Hampstead, N.H./Pinkerton Academy) scored her eighth goal of the season off a pass from freshman
Erin Hogan (Beaver, Pa./Beaver). Battling wet and muddy field conditions, the Vulcans stretched their lead to 2-0 at the 54:26-mark on a goal by junior
Carley Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell), who entered the game ranked third in the country with 1.25 goals per game, with an assist from Hogan.
IUP trimmed the deficit to 2-1 less than one minute later when senior Heather Robbins scored with an assist from Melissa Kornock in the 56th minute. In the 82nd minute, Work was issued her second yellow card of the day that forced the Cal U to continue with only 10 players for the remainder of the game. At the 86:52-mark, the Crimson Hawks evened the contest when Kornock tallied a goal off a feed from Robbins, 2-2.
Senior goalkeeper
Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust), who was named the PSAC Athlete of the Week earlier in the day, finished with three saves and allowed two goals after yielding only one goal in her first seven games of the season. The Crimson Hawks' Kelly Brennan tallied five saves in 110 minutes of action on Monday.
IUP finished the game with a slim 13-12 advantage in shots after attempting a combined four shots in the overtime periods, while the Vulcans posted a 5-2 edge in corner kicks.
Cal U returns to action this weekend with back-to-back PSAC road games, beginning on Friday, Oct. 7, against Mansfield at 2:30 p.m.
