EDINBORO, Pa. (Oct. 21) – The Vulcans moved into first place in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) West standings on Friday night with a 3-0 win (26-24, 25-22, 26-24) over Edinboro in divisional play at McComb Fieldhouse.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 23-4 overall with a 13-2 mark in league action. The Vulcans now hold a 0.5-game lead over Gannon, who lost at Clarion on Friday night. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots drop to 18-6 this season and are tied with Clarion for third place in the league standings with a 10-4 record in PSAC West play.
Junior
Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) led all players with 17 kills on 40 attempts and also added six blocks. Fellow juniors
Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and
Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) both collected six kills and four blocks, while classmates
Bridget Bielich (Bethel Park, Pa./Bethel Park) and
Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) each finished with five kills. Senior
Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) engineered the offense with 19 assists at Edinboro.
Senior
Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) paced the defensive effort with 12 digs, while sophomores
Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) and
Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) finished with nine and eight digs, respectively.
The Vulcans return to action with a five-match homestand at Hamer Hall, beginning Tuesday, Oct. 25, when they host Shepherd at 7 p.m.
