ERIE, Pa. (Oct. 2) – Sophomore Scott Campbell (Erie, Pa./Harbor Creek) and redshirt freshman Chris Hunkele (Hampton, Pa./Hampton) registered their first career goals in the first period on Sunday afternoon to help the No. 21 California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team post a 2-1 win at No. 4 Mercyhurst in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

With the victory, the Vulcans improve to 9-1-2 overall and move into first place in the league standings with 13 points behind a 4-1-1 record in conference play. Meanwhile, the Lakers drop to 8-2-0 this season with a 2-1-0 mark in league action.

Cal U took a 1-0 lead in the 25th minute when Campbell scored off a corner kick by senior Edin Sabic (Erie, Pa./Cathedral Prep), who now leads the team with 13 points. Less than 10 minutes later, Hunkele posted a goal off an assist from freshman Ian Cheek (Stafford, Va./Colonial Forge) at the 33:06-mark, 2-0. Mercyhurst trimmed the deficit to 2-1 in the 63rd minute when Billy Colton registered his team-leading seventh goal of the year off a penalty kick.

Redshirt senior goalkeeper Charlie Dagnal (Carnegie, Pa./Carlynton) made five saves to earn his ninth win of the season after entering the year with eight wins in his career. Mercyhurst's Diego Gustin tallied one save while playing all 90 minutes on Sunday.

In the losing effort, the Lakers finished with a 15-5 advantage in shots after taking 11 attempts in the second period while both teams took three corner kicks in the game.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Oct. 8, when it travels to face District of Columbia at 12 p.m. Last season, the Vulcans posted a 1-0 road win over the Firebirds in the first meeting between the two teams since 2004.
