CAL U NOTES
• Cal U returns to action on Saturday following a 42-41 comeback victory in overtime at nationally-ranked Saginaw Valley. Meanwhile, C.W. Post posted a 20-11 season-opening win on the road in Massachusetts against American International.
• Cal U rallied from down 17 points to claim a 42-41 overtime victory at then-No. 11 Saginaw Valley last week. The Vulcans scored the final 11 points of regulation, including a game-tying two-point conversion reception by #
Chedrick Cherry# with 6:24 left in regulation. In overtime, quarterback #
Josh Portis# connected with #
Terrance Moore# for a five-yard score and senior kicker #
Marc Domonkos# made the PAT attempt. Saginaw Valley responded with a touchdown in overtime, but missed the potential game-tying PAT attempt.
• The Vulcans and Pioneers are meeting for the first time in program history. C.W. Post is the 64th different opponent for Cal U since the 1916 season.
• The all-time winningest coach in program history,
Bryan Collins enters his 13th season as head coach of the Pioneers. While a member of the Northeast-10 Conference, he guided C.W. Post to four outright league championships and three NCAA Playoff appearances. Last year, Collins coached the Pioneers to a 6-5 overall record, a three-win improvement in their second year as members of the PSAC.
• In its second year in the PSAC, C.W. Post finished in a three-way tie for second place and only one-game back in the Eastern Division standings. The Pioneers return All-American defensive end
Xavier Brown after he collected 13.5 tackles for loss (TFL) and 8.5 sacks last season. A two-time PSAC East First-Team selection, he has totaled 32.0 TFL and 17.0 sacks in his career. Junior linebacker
Billy O'Connor, this week's PSAC East Defensive Player of the Week, is the top returning tackler for C.W. Post with 61 stops (35 solo) in only five starts. The Pioneers also return the PSAC East Rookie of the Year in
Thomas Beverly, who led the league with 1,094 rushing yards. Senior quarterback
Erik Andrewkavich directs the offense in 2010 after earning All-PSAC East Second-Team honors last year. An athletic quarterback, he passed for over 1,800 yards and rushed for over 700 yards last season. On special teams, C.W. Post returns sophomore kicker
Justin Bertone and return specialist
Ciwan McCoy after both saw significant action last year.
• The Vulcans have never faced a team from New York. C.W. Post marks the only new opponent this season for Cal U. However, head coach #John Luckhardt# posted an 11-7 record against schools in the Empire State while coaching at Washington & Jefferson.
• With two teams ranked among the preseason favorites losing in the first two weeks and an overtime victory on the road against a nationally-ranked opponent, the Vulcans are ranked No. 4 in the latest AFCA Top 25 poll. The mark ties the best ranking in program history, as Cal U finished the 2007 season ranked No. 4. Over the last three-plus seasons, the Vulcans have been ranked in the AFCA Top 25 poll for 37 weeks.
• Ninth-year head coach #John Luckhardt# has established a winning tradition at Cal U. That tradition has carried over into games against teams from the PSAC East. In the last eight seasons, the Vulcans hold a combined 17-4 record (.810) against PSAC East opponents.
• For the first time in program history, the Vulcans will open the year with back-to-back games outside of Pennsylvania. Cal U opened the year with a 420-mile trip to University Center, Mich. - nearly two hours north of Detroit. This week, the Vulcans will travel another 400 miles to Brookville, N.Y. - 15 miles east of the borough of Queens in New York.
• Cal U has won 53 of its last 63 games (.841) overall, dating back to the start of the 2005 season. The Vulcans have posted a 33-4 (.892) record in regular season games dating back to the 2006 campaign.
• Since joining the program last year, senior kicker #
Marc Domonkos# has made 11-of-15 field goals and 54-of-56 PAT attempts. Perhaps none of those kicks were more clutch than his PAT in the first overtime last week at Saginaw Valley to give Cal U a 42-35 lead. On their possession in overtime, the Cardinals scored a touchdown but missed the PAT try to give the Vulcans a 42-41 victory.
• For the second-straight week, the Vulcans will play an opponent that features an athletic, elusive quarterback. Last week, C.W. Post senior signal-caller
Erik Andrewkavich amassed 324 yards of total offense, including 133 rushing yards, and three touchdowns against American International. Meanwhile in Michigan, Saginaw Valley quarterback
Charles Dowdell finished 363 yards of total offense and four touchdowns (two passing, two rushing) against Cal U.
• After trailing 21-3 in the first half last week, Cal U rallied to tie the game at 35-35 and posted its 10th fourth-quarter comeback under head coach #John Luckhardt#. In each of the last four seasons, the Vulcans have posted at least one fourth-quarter comeback with the most recent occurring last September when they scored in the final minute to defeat Clarion.
• Junior wide receiver #
Chedrick Cherry# was instrumental in last week's comeback victory at nationally-ranked Saginaw Valley. The junior receiver finished the game with four receptions for 50 yards, including a 22-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter. On the ensuing PAT attempt, Cherry caught the game-tying two-point conversion with 6:24 left in regulation. Earlier in the game, the Cincinnati native scored a 17-yard rushing touchdown on a double-reverse.
• A special teams standout last year for Cal U, #
Dominique Curry# earned a spot on the final 53-man roster with the St. Louis Rams. In four preseason games, the 6-2 wide receiver made two receptions for 25 yards and saw action on special teams. Curry is one of six wide receivers on the active roster for the Rams. In his college career, he posted over 2,200 yards and 15 touchdowns while playing for both Cheyney and Cal U.
• After transferring from The Citadel, senior running back #
Cody Wilson# appeared in 14 games for Cal U as a reserve running back and on special teams last year. He finished the season with only one reception for six yards. However, the former Yough standout led the Vulcans in both receptions (seven) and receiving yards (66) last week at Saginaw Valley.
• In the season-opening win last week at Saginaw Valley, four players made their first career starts for Cal U. On offense, sophomore #
Eric Kush# made the start at left tackle after playing in all 15 games as a reserve last year. Junior transfer #
Jordan Scott# earned the nod at running back after attending Idaho State last year. Defensively, redshirt junior #
Kevin Crawford# started on the line after last playing for Virginia in 2008. Junior defensive back #
Shawn Anderson# opened the game at safety after seeing action in 24 games over the last two seasons.
