Men's Soccer blanks Wheeling Jesuit, 1-0

WHEELING, W.Va. (Sept. 7) – Behind the first career goal by freshman midfielder Christopher Karns (Mars, Pa./Mars), the Vulcans earned a 1-0 shutout victory at Wheeling Jesuit on Tuesday night.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team improves to 2-0 with both wins coming via shutout. Meanwhile, Wheeling Jesuit falls to 2-1 this season.

After a scoreless first half, Karns scored the game-winning goal off an assist from fellow freshman Russell Bootwright (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) in the 82nd minute.

The Vulcans out-shot the Cardinals by 15-9 margin, including an 8-3 edge in the second half. Cal U also posted a 3-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Senior goalkeeper Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) earned his second shutout of the year ninth of his career after recording four saves on nine shots. Cardinal senior Shane Young finished with eight saves on 15 attempts.

Cal U returns to action on Saturday, Sept. 11, when it opens Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play by hosting Mercyhurst at 1 p.m.
