CALIFORNIA (Sept. 5) – Behind relentless offensive pressure and stout defensive play, the No. 8 California University of Pennsylvania women' soccer team claimed a 1-0 victory against Charleston (W.Va.) on Sunday afternoon in the home-opener at Roadman Park.
With the shutout, the Vulcans improve to 2-0 this season. Meanwhile, the Golden Eagles fall to 0-2.
Cal U scored the game's only goal in the 18th minute when freshman forward
Tonya Fabian (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) scored her third goal of the season off assists from sophomore
Carley Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) and junior
Elizabeth Johnston (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley). The Vulcans continued to pressure the Golden Eagles' defense, but were unable to add to the score the rest of the half.
After preventing Charleston from attempting a shot in the first half, the Golden Eagles finally managed their only shot of the game at the 55:49-mark.
For the game, Cal U held an impressive 34-1 advantage in shots and 6-0 edge in corner kicks. Through the first two games this season, the Vulcans have out-shot their opponents by a 64-5 margin.
Junior goalkeeper
Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) registered her 13th career shutout after facing only one shot. Charleston's Catherine Perry collected 16 saves in net while facing a barrage of shots.
The Vulcans return to action on Wednesday, Sept. 8, when they open Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play by hosting rival IUP at 4 p.m. Live stats for the game will be available by clicking
