Cal U opens season with two losses

BOCA RATON, Fla. (Sept. 3) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team suffered a pair of losses on Friday against Rollins (Fla.) and Colorado-Colorado Spring at the season-opening Courtyard by Marriott Invitational hosted by Lynn (Fla.).

The Vulcans (0-2) opened the day with a 3-0 loss (17-25, 23-25, 24-26) to Rollins in the afternoon before falling 3-1 (23-25, 25-13, 12-25, 18-25) to Colorado-Colorado Springs at night.

Against the Tars, sophomore Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) led the offensive effort with eight kills and fellow sophomore Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) added seven kills, a team-high 15 assists, eight digs and two service aces. Senior Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) registered 17 digs, while sophomore Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) collected 12 digs in the loss.

Harris and Fromknecht again anchored the Vulcans' offensive effort with 11 and eight kills, respectively. Junior Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) directed the attack with 16 assists and Fromknecht tallied 12 assists. Paronish paced the defense with 14 digs, while Eshleman and Fromknecht each posted eight digs. McMullen established a career-high with five service aces and collected six digs.

Cal U returns to action at the two-day invitational tomorrow, Saturday, Sept. 4, when it faces No. 16 Lewis (Ill.) and host Lynn (Fla.).
