Volleyball tops IUP at Hamer Hall, 3-1

CALIFORNIA (Sept 28) – Behind 15 kills each from sophomores Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) and Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford), the Vulcans earned a 3-1 victory (25-23, 25-7, 17-25, 25-19) over IUP in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Tuesday night at Hamer Hall.

With the win, the California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team improves to 9-7 this year with a 6-1 mark in conference play and extends its home win streak to 33 matches. Meanwhile, IUP drops to 11-5 overall and 3-4 in league action this season.

Fromknecht tied her season high with 15 kills after hitting at a .520 clip, while Harris also evened her career best with 15 kills against the Crimson Hawks. Junior Katya Kopanarova (Sofia, Bulgaria/81 Victor Hugo) recorded her first double-double of the year with 11 kills and 19 digs, while sophomore Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) added nine kills.

Senior libero Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) paced the defensive effort with 22 digs. Sophomore Ana Almeida (Belo Horizonte, Brazil/Colegio Promove) and junior Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) both collected 16 digs in the victory. Eshleman also directed the offense with 53 assists, her second 50-plus match of the season.

The Vulcans continue conference play on Saturday, Oct. 2, when they host Gannon at 2 p.m. Cal U swept the three meetings against Gannon last season, including a 3-1 victory in the quarterfinals of the PSAC Tournament.
