CALIFORNIA (Sept. 28) – Three different players scored a goal on Tuesday, as the Vulcans earned a 3-0 win against Ohio Valley (W.Va.) in a non-conference contest at Roadman Park.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team improves to 5-2-1 on the season and the Fighting Scots fall to 2-6-1. The match-up marked the third-straight season that the two teams have met and the third victory for the Vulcans. Last year Cal U won convincingly, 9-1, at home and in 2008 the Vulcans won a close contest, 3-2, at Ohio Valley.
Cal U opened the scoring midway through the first half when junior
Brady Sanders (Level Green, Pa./Penn-Trafford) took a pass from sophomore
Nemanja Visekruna (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Thomas More) and put the Vulcans ahead, 1-0. Despite holding a 7-1 shot advantage in the first period, Sanders' goal was the only tally of the half for the home team.
In the second half, Cal U converted two of its four shots into scores as
Ryan Grindle (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) tallied his third goal of the season off of assists by
Chris Moehler (Centreville, Va./Paul VI Catholic) and
Gaby Deller-Borgono (Toronto, Ontario/Oakwood C.I.). Six minutes later at the 79:56-mark, freshman
Russell Bootwright (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) created his own scoring opportunity after a steal and scored his team-leading fourth goal as a Vulcan.
Senior
Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) recorded the win, as he did not allow a goal over the 90 minutes of play. The shutout marks the fifth of the season for the goalkeeper and the 12th of his career.
The Vulcans return to action on Thursday, Sept 30, when they head to the “Old Line State” to take on Washington Adventist (Md.) in Takoma Park, Md., for a 4 p.m. contest.
