Alvine wins 100th career game as Vulcans roll

LOCK HAVEN, Pa. (Sept. 25) – Freshman Bethany Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) tied a career high in points and head coach Al Alvine reached a career milestone, as the No. 13 Vulcans posted a 4-1 victory over  Lock Haven in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action on Saturday.

Alvine collected his 100th career coaching victory as the California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team moved to 8-0-1 overall with a 4-0-1 mark in PSAC competition. The win gives the Vulcans 13 points in the conference standings for the 2010 campaign. The Bald Eagles fall to 3-5-0 overall with a 1-5-0 league mark.

Smyda tied her career high with five points behind two goals and an assist. The game capped off a big week in which the rookie scored four goals and collected two assists to help the Vulcans go 3-0.

Cal U scored just four minutes into the game when sophomore Carley Work (Hopewell, Pa./Hopewell) scored her third goal of the season on a pass from Smyda. Just under two and a half minutes later, junior Kristen Orrett (Pickering, Ontario/Pickering) posted her second goal of the season from 21 yards out. In the 15th minute, Smyda scored her first goal of the game (seventh of the season) after taking a pass from senior Carina Honeygosky (Pittsburgh, Pa./Baldwin). At the 21:54-mark, Smyda recorded her second goal of the game with assists from Honeygosky and Work.

Junior goalkeeper Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) made two saves while allowing only one goal in 90 minutes of action. For the season, Jackson advances to 8-0-1 and has only given up two goals in almost 800 minutes of play.

The Vulcans return to Roadman Park next weekend for three games in a row with the first coming on Friday, Oct. 1 against PSAC foe Mansfield. Game time is slated for 2 p.m.
