CALIFORNIA (Sept. 2) – The California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team used three goals from three different players on Thursday evening, as it posted a 3-0 shutout victory against Alderson-Broaddus at Roadman Park.
The Vulcans (1-0) have now faced the Battlers (0-1) in six-consecutive season-openers and have won the last three meetings by a combined score of 12-4.
After a defensive start to the game, sophomore
Ryan Grindle (Pittsburgh, Pa./North Hills) scored his first career goal in the 20th minute off a throw-in by senior
Adam Green (Hatboro, Pa./Hatboro-Horsham). The Vulcans took a 1-0 lead into halftime after the two teams combined for only eight first-half shots, as the Battlers were unable to attempt a shot until the 22:19-mark.
In the second half, Cal U expanded the lead to 3-0 with a pair of goals in a span of only 1:08. Freshman
Gaby Deller-Borgono (Toronto, Ontario/Oakwood C.I.) collected a goal in his college debut with assists from junior
Brady Sanders (Level Green, Pa./Penn-Trafford) and
Joe Friedman (Warminster, Pa./William Tennent). In the 60th minute, newcomer
Russell Bootwright (Richmond, Va./Mills E. Godwin) scored while midair via a feed from Sanders.
Senior goalkeeper
Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) registered his eighth career shutout after making one save on eight shot attempts. A-B starter Neil Wright-Elliot suffered the loss after surrendering three goals on 15 shots in 82-plus minutes of action.
Behind 13 shots in the second half, the Vulcans out-shot the Battlers by an 18-8 margin.
Cal U is idle this weekend before returning to action on Tuesday, Sept. 7, when it travels to face Wheeling Jesuit at 7 p.m. Last year, the Vulcans claimed a 2-1 comeback victory at Roadman Park against the Cardinals.
