CALIFORNIA (Sept. 18) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team opened Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) play by collecting four victories in crossover action over the weekend, including five-set wins against Shippensburg and Lock Haven.
With the victories, the Vulcans move to .500 for the first time this season at 6-6. Cal U also extended its win streak in conference play to 46 matches, as it last suffered a regular-season PSAC loss on Oct. 24, 2006.
Against Shippensburg on Friday, Cal U earned a 3-2 victory (25-21, 21-25 25-18, 20-25, 15-5). Sophomore middle hitter
Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) established a career high with 17 kills on a .500 hitting percentage, while classmate
Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) finished with 15 kills and six blocks (all assists). Senior
Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) tallied 30 digs, while junior
Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) finished with a career-high 25 digs. Junior setter
Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) directed the offense with a career-best 56 assists and totaled eight kills and eight digs.
The Vulcans closed Friday with a 3-1 win (23-25, 25-13, 25-15, 25-9) at East Stroudsburg. Franz led the offensive effort with 13 kills, while Eshleman finished with eight kills, 47 assists and eight digs. Paronish and McMullen posted 27 and 23 digs, respectively, and freshman outside hitter
Molly Delaney (Carmel, Ind./Westfield) set a season high with 15 digs and five blocks (two solo).
In a rematch of last year's PSAC and NCAA Atlantic Regional Championships, Cal U rallied to a 3-2 victory (25-18, 25-16, 18-25, 15-25, 15-10) at Lock Haven on Saturday. Sophomore outside hitter
Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) collected a career-high 15 kills and Franz added 12 kills and six blocks (all assists). Paronish tallied a season-high 33 digs, while McMullen and junior transfer
Katya Kopanarova (Sofia, Bulgaria/81 Victor Hugo) combined for 34 digs against the Bald Eagles. Eshleman guided the offensive attack with 43 assists and added five kills, nine digs and six blocks (three solo).
The Vulcans closed the crossover weekend with a 3-0 sweep (25-14, 25-12 25-15) versus Millersville. Franz registered eight kills while hitting at a .571 clip and a trio of Cal U players finished with six kills. McMullen and Paronish led the defense with 18 and 12 digs, respectively, while McMullen collected five service aces. Eshleman posted 29 assists and seven digs in the victory.
Cal U returns to non-conference action on Tuesday, Sept. 21, when it hosts Alderson-Broaddus at Hamer Hall, starting at 7 p.m.
