Cal U suffers first loss of season, 3-2

ERIE, Pa. (Sept. 15) – Trailing 2-1 in the first half, the Vulcans rallied to tie the game in 39th minute before suffering a 3-2 loss at Gannon on Wednesday evening in Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) action.

With the loss, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team falls to 2-1-1 overall and 0-1-1 in conference play. Meanwhile, Gannon improves to 4-1 this year with a 1-0 mark in league action.

The Vulcans jumped out to a 1-0 lead when junior Brady Sanders (Level Green, Pa./Penn-Trafford) scored off an assist by freshman Christopher Karns (Mars, Pa./Mars) only 27 seconds into the game. The Golden Knights evened the game and took a 2-1 lead in the 23rd minute after a pair of goals by sophomore Tyler Hollingsworth in less than two minutes. Cal U evened the score before halftime with a goal from sophomore Nemanja Visekruna (Hamilton, Ontario/St. Thomas More) on a penalty kick at the 39:26-mark.

In the second period, Gannon broke the tie when senior Afrim Latifi scored the game-winning goal (unassisted) from 15 yards out. Cal U was unable to even the game on its final three offensive shots of the game during the final 10 minutes.

Junior Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) suffered the loss in net after allowing his first goals of the season, finishing with a season-high seven saves on 20 shots. Gannon's Michael Kickel earned the win after making a pair of saves on nine attempts.

The Vulcans are idle this weekend before returning to non-conference play on Tuesday, Sept. 21, when they host Pitt-Johnstown at 4 p.m. In last year's meeting, Cal U earned a 1-0 win on the road after scoring in the 87th minute.
