CAL U NOTES
• Cal U returns to Adamson Stadium this weekend for its latest home-opener since 2002. Last week, the Vulcans scored 30-unanswered points in a 40-13 win at C.W. Post. Meanwhile, East Stroudsburg suffered a 23-17 loss to IUP after scoring 10 points in the first quarter.

• Sophomore running back #Lamont Smith# rushed for over 100 yards and three scores last week, as Cal U posted a 40-13 win at C.W. Post. The Vulcans scored 30-unanswered points, rushed for over 250 yards and forced five turnovers in the victory. After the Pioneers scored 13 points in the first quarter, the Cal U defense allowed only 132 yards of total offense in the final three quarters. Junior defensive back #Shawn Anderson# made a pair of interceptions, while classmate #Erik Harris# had seven tackles, an intercpetion and blocked punt.

• The Vulcans and Warriors are meeting for third time in the last five years, but just the sixth time overall. After battling to a tie in the first-ever meeting in 1968, East Stroudsburg won the next three games before Cal U claimed a 26-3 win in the 2007 season-opener.

• The all-time winningest coach in PSAC history, Denny Douds is in his 37th season as head coach of the Warriors. He is the fourth-longest tenured coach among those with 200 victories in all NCAA divisions and is just one of six to spend his entire career at the same school. While at East Stroudsburg, he has guided the program to nine PSAC East crowns (last: 2003), three PSAC titles (last:1982) and four NCAA Playoff appearances (last: 2009).

• After making its third NCAA post-season appearance in the last six years, East Stroudsburg boasts an experienced offense and aggressive defense. Senior quarterback Matt Marshall again directs the offense after finishing second in the PSAC in total offense and third in passing yards last season. Senior wide receivers Jeff Giglio and Ed Kiser are among Marshall's favorite targets after combing for over 1,400 yards on 80 receptions last year. The defense that led the PSAC with 33 turnovers last year will again be led by linebacker Matt Freed, a two-time All-American. Freed led the conference in tackles in both 2008 and 2009 and last year led the league with 10.0 sacks and 18.0 tackles for loss (TFL). On special teams this year, kicker Taylor Groff is 3-for-4 on field goals and a perfect 9-9 on PAT attempts as a true freshman.

• After posting a pair of road victories and two teams ranked among the preseason favorites losing in the first two weeks, the Vulcans are ranked No. 4 in the latest AFCA Top 25 poll. The mark ties the best ranking in program history, as Cal U finished the 2007 season ranked No. 4. Over the last three-plus seasons, the Vulcans have been ranked in the AFCA Top 25 poll for 38 weeks.

• Ninth-year head coach #John Luckhardt# has established a winning tradition at Cal U. That tradition has carried over into games against teams from the PSAC East. In the last eight seasons, the Vulcans hold a combined 18-4 record (.818) against PSAC East opponents.

• This weekend's game will feature a meeting of 200-win coaches in #John Luckhardt# (Cal U; 207) and Denny Douds (East Stroudsburg; 227) for only the 29th time in all NCAA history with the last coming in last year's Division II playoffs between Luckhardt and Mel Tjeerdsma (Northwest Missouri State).

• Cal U has won 54 of its last 64 games (.844) overall, dating back to the start of the 2005 season. The Vulcans have posted a 34-4 (.895) record in regular season games dating back to the 2006 campaign.

• With their first two opponents this year featuring dual-threat quarterbacks, the Vulcans will face a traditional drop-back signal caller this weekend in East Stroudsburg senior Matt Marshall. Last year, he passed for nearly 3,000 yards and 26 touchdowns, while completing over 60 percent of his attempts.

• Two of the mainstays throughout the Vulcans' run to the NCAA Semifinals have been defensive tackle #Sam Fikaris# and center #Nick Piccirillo#. Both seniors have started 38 games and received All-PSAC West accolades in their careers.

• Junior safety #Shawn Anderson# played in 24 games as a reserve over the last two seasons before becoming a starter this year. After two starts, he leads the PSAC with three interceptions and is third on the team with 11 tackles (six solo). Last week, Anderson made four stops and registered a pair of interceptions at C.W. Post with both interceptions halting drives in Vulcan territory.

• The Vulcans feature a group of 24 seniors in 2010. The senior class has compiled a record of 38-7 and started a combined 219 games.

• Through the first two games of the season, the Vulcans lead the conference and NCAA Division II with a plus-eight turnover margin behind six interceptions and three fumble recoveries. Last week against C.W. Post, Cal U forced five turnovers with three interceptions and committed its first turnover of the year on a first-quarter interception after a tipped ball.

• Since staring for Central Catholic, #Lamont Smith# redshirted at Colorado before playing at Phoenix College last season. In only the first two weeks playing for the Vulcans, he has proven to be a dynamic running back. Smith, who was named the PSAC West Offensive Player of the Week on Monday, leads the team and ranks third in the PSAC with 206 yards. Last week, he rushed for a career-high 139 yards and three touchdowns in the 40-13 victory at C.W. Post.

• A special teams standout last year for Cal U, #Dominique Curry# earned a spot on the final 53-man roster with the St. Louis Rams. While he didn't play in the season-opener last week, the 6-2 wide receiver appeared in four preseason games, playing on special teams and making two catches. Curry is one of six wide receivers on the active roster for the Rams. In his college career, he posted over 2,200 yards and 15 touchdowns while playing for both Cheyney and Cal U.

• After back-to-back lengthy road trips to open the year, the Vulcans return to Adamson Stadium this weekend. Since the 2005 season, Cal U has won 30 of its last 35 games at home.

• Since redshirting in 2008, junior #Devin Cox# has been one of the most versatile players for the Vulcans. Last year, he appeared in 14 games while playing on both the offensive and defensive lines. Cox started training camp in battle for time on the defensive line, but shifted back to offense due to injuries and has started the first two games at right guard.

• Since 1993, Cal U holds an 11-6 record (.647) in home-openers at Adamson Stadium. The Vulcans have won nine of their last 10 home-openers with the only loss coming last season to Saginaw Valley.

• Cal U has won 14 of its last 17 games in the season's first month (August/September) under head coach #John Luckhardt#. Overall, the Vulcans have won 29 of their last 38 outings in August/September since 2002.
