CALIFORNIA (Sept. 12) – Freshman forward
Bethany Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) tallied two goals and senior forward
Sam Regney (Monaca, Pa./Monaca) collected a goal and two assists on Sunday, as the No. 7 California University of Pennsylvania women's soccer team cruised to a 6-0 victory against Wheeling Jesuit at Roadman Park.
With the victory, the Vulcans remain undefeated this season at 3-0-1. Meanwhile, the Cardinals drop to 1-3 this year. Since the 2008 season, Cal U has won its last 12 games against West Virginia Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WVIAC) schools.
Regney started the offensive outburst in the 10th minute with her third goal of the season off an assist from Smyda. Nearly eight minutes later, Smyda registered her first goal of the day off feeds from Regney and junior
Erin Feltz (Munhall, Pa./Steel Valley). Cal U added to its first-half lead at the 30:29-mark when junior
Darija Davidson (Courtice, Ontario/St. Stephen's) collected her first career goal off a pass from freshman
Kamilla Lillefjaere (Akershus, Norway/Wang Elite Sports Academy).
Less than a minute after halftime, Smyda scored an unassisted goal after forcing a turnover deep in Wheeling Jesuit territory. In the 47th minute, freshman
Tonya Fabian (Jefferson Hills, Pa./Thomas Jefferson) recorded her fourth goal of the year before junior
Chaning Wimer (Lititz, Pa./Manheim Township) closed the scoring with a goal at the 52:33-mark.
In addition to the scoreboard, the Vulcans dominated in the shot and corner kick categories. After shooting more than 20 times in both periods, Cal U out-shot Wheeling Jesuit by an impressive 47-1 margin and held an 8-2 edge in corner kicks.
Junior
Paula Jackson (Kingston, Jamaica/Wolmer's Trust) and freshman
Ashley Smyda (Irwin, Pa./Penn-Trafford) combined for the shutout in net. Wheeling Jesuit starting goalkeeper Melissa Taylor made seven saves in the first period, while reserve Chelsey Trefnoff collected six saves on 25 shots.
The Vulcans return to conference play on Wednesday, Sept. 15, when they travel to face Gannon at 4 p.m. Live stats for the game will be available
