CALIFORNIA (Sept. 11) – With both teams ranked in the Top 10 in the Atlantic Region, the California University of Pennsylvania men's soccer team battled Mercyhurst to a 0-0 double-overtime tie in the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC)-opener on Saturday afternoon at Roadman Park.
With the tie, the Vulcans and Lakers both move to 2-0-1 on the young season and 0-0-1 in league play. Last season, the Lakers swept the regular-season series against the Vulcans.
Both teams played strong defense for the entire contest with the Vulcans tallying seven shots while holding the Lakers to 14. Senior goalkeeper
Derek Yobbi (South Park, Pa./South Park) was strong in net once again for Cal U, posting his third shutout of the season after making five saves.
The Lakers got on the board initially when sophomore Matias Karioja was able to sneak a corner kick past Yobbi in the 84th minute of play. However the goal was taken off the board when the officials ruled that play had been stopped for a substitution and the whistle for signifying play to resume had not been given.
Moments later, sophomore forward
Chris Moehler (Centreville, Va./Paul VI Catholic) got behind the Mercyhurst defense to get a one-on-one with Lakers' goalkeeper Diego Gustin. Gustin came out to challenge Moehler and was unable to corral the ball and Moehler regained possession behind the keeper, but was unable to capitalize as his shot flew just over the crossbar.
With Mercyhurst playing the final minute of regulation and all of overtime a man-down due to yellow cards, the Vulcans turned up the aggression on offense but Gustin came up strong for the Lakers.
Cal U returns to action on Wednesday, Sept. 15, as it travels to Erie, Pa., for a conference game against Gannon at 6 p.m. Last season, the Golden Knights swept the series with 4-1 and 3-0 victories.
