BROOVILLE, N.Y. (Sept. 11) – Facing a first-quarter deficit, the No. 4 Vulcans scored 30-unanswered points, rushed for 270 yards and forced five turnovers in a 40-13 victory over C.W. Post at Hickox Field on Saturday afternoon.
With the victory, the California University of Pennsylvania football improves to 2-0 this season. The Vulcans, who have trailed in both games this year, made their first-ever to trip New York State this weekend. Meanwhile, C.W. Post, who was receiving votes in the American Football Coaches Association (AFCA) Top 25 Coaches' Poll, drops to 1-1 this year.
In his first start this year, sophomore transfer
Lamont Smith (Penn Hills, Pa./Central Catholic/Phoenix) rushed for 139 yards on 25 carries with three touchdowns (17, 1, 2). He played a pivotal role in the first half, rushing for 100 yards on only 15 attempts (6.7 yards per attempt). A former standout at Central Catholic, Smith has rushed for a team-high 206 yards and four touchdowns this year after playing for Phoenix College in 2009.
The two teams traded touchdowns midway through the first before C.W. Post took its final lead of the game at 14-13 with a two-yard rushing touchdown by sophomore running back Thomas Beverly, who was limited to 70 yards after rushing for over 1,000 yards last season. Cal U responded with a 36-yard touchdown strike from senior quarterback
Josh Portis (Woodland Hills, Calif./William H. Taft/Maryland) to junior wide receiver
Derrick Jones (Lynwood, Calif./Long Beach Poly/Oregon) with 2:57 remaining in the first quarter.
Portis finished the game with 147 passing yards on 10-of-18 passing with two touchdowns and one interception (off a tipped pass). The 6-4 quarterback also added 74 rushing yards on only six attempts.
After recording a safety on a punt attempt early in the second quarter, the Vulcans expanded their lead to 23-13 when Smith capped a seven-play drive with an 17-yard scoring scamper with 8:12 left before halftime. On the next C.W. Post possession, junior defensive back
Erik Harris (New Oxford, Pa./New Oxford) intercepted a pass near midfield and returned it to the Pioneers' 32-yard line. Cal U converted on the turnover with a 32-yard field goal by senior
Marc Domonkos (Johnstown, Pa./Bishop McCort/Lock Haven) to take a 26-13 lead into the break.
In the third quarter, Cal U took a 33-13 lead with 7:01 left on a one-yard touchdown plunge by Smith after senior linebacker
Anthony Roberts (Phillipsburg, N.J./Phillipsburg/Iowa Central C.C.) set-up the drive by recovering a fumble. The Pioneers' committed another fumble on their next possession and the Vulcans capitalized on the turnover with their final touchdown of the game – a two-yard score by Smith with 12:51 remaining.
Harris led the defensive effort with seven tackles (five solo) and one interception. Roberts and fellow linebacker
Terrance Hemsley (Cheltenham, Md./Gwynn Park) each added six tackles, while junior defensive back
Shawn Anderson (Pittsburgh, Pa./Penn Hills) recorded two interceptions.
