Volleyball loses in quarterfinals, 3-1

EDINBORO, Pa. (Nov. 9) – The California University of Pennsylvania volleyball team was eliminated from the Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) Tournament in the quarterfinals on Tuesday night, falling 3-1 (21-25, 25-19, 25-23, 25-12) at Edinboro in the McComb Fieldhouse.

With the loss, the Vulcans fall to 21-12 overall this season and now must wait on a possible at-large berth to next week's NCAA Tournament. The loss also snapped a nine-game winning streak by Cal U in the PSAC Tournament, dating back to November 2006. Meanwhile, the Fighting Scots improve to 28-4 this year and will face Lock Haven in the semifinals on Friday at Clarion, Pa.

Sophomore middle hitter Meghan Franz (Cranberry Twp., Pa./Seneca Valley) led the offensive attack with 13 kills, while classmate Kelly Fromknecht (Erie, Pa./McDowell) finished with eight kills. In the loss, fellow sophomores Brandy Harris (Bedford, Pa./Bedford) and Chelsea Wilson (Bellwood, Pa./Bellwood Antis) added seven and six kills, respectively. Junior setter Kortney Eshleman (Greencastle, Pa./Greencastle) directed the offense with 20 assists and freshman Abbey Freund (Cottage Grove, Wis./Monona Grove) tallied 15 assists.

Senior libero Julie Paronish (Hastings, Pa./Northern Cambria) collected a team-high 12 digs, while junior Sara McMullen (State College, Pa./State College) finished with six digs. Wilson led the team at the net with six blocks (one solo).

The Vulcans, who entered the tournament as the third seed in the regional rankings, will find out if they received one of the five at-large berths to the NCAA Atlantic Regional Tournament on Sunday, Nov. 14, via a webstream selection show on NCAA.com.
